I remember the first time I started reading old school sales letters.

Especially, sales letters written by the * real * greats of the old school.

Copywriters like Gary Halbert, Gary Bencivenga, Joseph Sugarman, etc.

For most people, they find it strange to read old sales letters that sell everything from ham to skincare to perfumes.

Love it.

So today, I’d like to dive into one of the most critical elements when selling … well, anything.

Specifically, its headline.

Once you’re good at writing headlines, your blog posts will generate more engagement … more emails will be opened … your face-to-face selling will be easier … and your sales letters will sell more of your products.

My goal is to help you * think * differently.

With the formalities out of the way … let’s dive into:

The first old school sales letter I read had a fantastic title:

“The lazy way to riches”.

A lot is happening in just these six words.

First, touch a central desire of your target market: “Riches.”

Second, it has an excellent contrast with the “lazy” and the “riches”, which connect directly with our psychology and make us pay attention. Why? Due to the general belief, at the time, it was that to get rich, you had to work incredibly hard. But is this guy talking about getting rich being a lazy bastard? I mean, how can you * NOT * pay attention? If you can, and it makes sense, contrast is a powerful concept to use in your headlines.

This headline is one of my favorite headlines of all time.

However, this brings me straight to the next point when it comes to writing world-class headlines:


“Your headline’s only job is to get your reader to read the first line.”

I first heard about this idea in the book “The Adweek Copywriting Handbook”, written by the great Joseph Sugarman.

Think about it:

If people don’t read your headline … how are they supposed to read your ad, blog post, or email? And if they don’t read your content … how are they going to buy your product or service?

Therefore, writing a great headline is critical.

A headline that stops them in their tracks and makes them pay attention.

Of course, having a great product is essential too. But that’s a story for another time.

Let’s get back to how to write a winning headline that converts.

As I mentioned earlier, I am not going to focus on generic templates. Today’s goal is to help you think differently so you can write YOUR own headlines in YOUR own voice. Obviously this takes practice. But the more you do it, the better you will become. For example, you will never be a world-class pianist if you never sit in front of a piano. The same goes for headline writing.

I love the simplicity.

I like to get the best result with the least amount of work, and if people want to classify me as lazy, so be it.

But learning how to write great headlines takes a lot of work and practice.

So while we’re not focusing on templates, I’ll give you some ideas for different headlines to keep things simple for you.

But first, let’s look at some examples of different ways to write a good headline.

After that, I’ll show you ten real-world examples of classic headlines.

Here are some examples of different ways to write headlines:

  • Begin your title with the word “Announcing …” or “Finally …” or “New …” or “How …” or “Why …” or “Presenting …”
  • Tell a story
  • Include your offer in your headline. For example, “special offer” or “free offer” or just include the price.
  • If you can include a time frame, deadline, or other specific time elements, this will automatically create a natural shortage
  • Include the # 1 biggest benefit that matters most to your prospect
  • Talk about specific mistakes your prospect might be making
  • Include numbers
  • Ask your reader a direct question
  • If you can’t think of anything, writing a simple “How To” title is an easy way to get started.

The locals are lucky to have the popular bakery known as Erick Schat’s Bakkerÿ famous for its original Sheepherder Bread®. For us, their Chili Cheese Bread was a great way to refuel our bodies after a tough climbing session, although I’m sure many high-performance athletes would disagree …

For $ 2 a night, we stayed at “The Pit” campground. Our lodging unit was David’s Green Honda Element, commonly known as the “Hulk.” The rear of the SUV cleverly became our sleeping space, cushioning the hard plastic floor with a tattered, sad-looking Madrock crash pad.

During the week we were there, we had a simple routine. I called it, the “Valley People’s Routine” … (for no apparent reason other than it sounded pretty incredible). On the consecutive days, we were going up mainly to the Milks. This climbing spot is possibly the best known, if not the most popular, area of ​​Bishop. It is home to some of the toughest routes in the world, such as Mandala V12 and Evilution V11 on the milks.

A unique feature of the Milks includes the highballs, which can reach up to 5 stories high at the top. While highball climbs are one that I keep shy of, it is impressive and inspiring to see other climbers boost their mental game.

During our entire stay, we had two days off. One was spent in a natural hot spring in a slightly secret location (where I’ll only reveal the whereabouts in exchange for your favorite secret spot … or “the Google”); the other rest day we spent in a secluded stretch of bushes and weeds where we sunbathed, played games and drank beers. We also had a game of “plucking body hair with tweezers”, but it got old really fast.

Some nights we had big bonfires and we invited our neighbors for a beer. One particular night, I brought out my ukulele and our neighbor Yve brought his mandolin. Bishop, without a doubt, has been one of my favorite climbing yards. I identified myself as an evangelical before Donald Trump’s presidency. Now, I cling to my Christian faith, but I dropped the evangelical label; I am ashamed. American evangelicals challenge biblical principles to support Trump’s vile, rude, and crude conduct. He gave them pro-life laws and moderate judges, both vital to his cause. I believe in a free market, a small government, few but useful rules for business, and a robust private sector. The government should not tax businesses or provide them with welfare. Why are evangelicals choosing the timid path and not condemning Trump’s behavior? A fundamental hallmark of following Jesus is loving people as we love ourselves: the Golden Rule. As Christians, we do not criticize a person. Instead, we pray for him or her, but we condemn his or her behavior. Donald Trump’s conduct shows that he is a narcissist who lies – including lying to the Special Counsel – intimidates and degrades people, and boasts of groping women. These offensive traits are anti-Christian, but evangelicals back it up. The message from evangelicals is clear: to get anti-abortion laws and moderate judges, we will ignore Trump’s unbiblical offenses.

Evangelicals compromise Christian values ​​to support Trump

Evangelicals tout Trump as the most pro-life president the United States is remaking with his choice of moderate judges. So, they must back it up. So they ignore behavior that defies almost everything Jesus taught. It is a sad day when Christians who should shape moral ideals in society fall into the depths of Trump. I think abortion is wrong, but I know from scripture that tolerating Trump’s rude and abusive style is unbiblical and shows the opposite of Jesus’ messages. As my mom used to say, two mistakes are never made right! If Trump attended my university, I would expel him from my class for his behavior and bullying tactics.

Where do young people go for moral and ethical leaders? Trump demoted the Office of the President. The politicians’ approach is shortsighted. They focus on their favorite projects and serve their donors and sponsors, not people. Evangelicals gave up their moral clout to support Trump with his fluid views on abortion and his laid-back moral character. They lost their moral fiber. The Republicans claimed they had the moral ground; but, like evangelicals, they are silent. They fear Trump’s venom if you don’t like their reactions to his personal attacks on others. Democrats are quick to bet positions further to the left than the next.

Is it any wonder that young people cry out for socialism even though polls show they don’t understand what it means? They hope it’s better than the current mess. But they don’t realize that politicians would gain significant influence in the economy, and history shows that that would be disastrous.

Jesus teaches love, not hatred and division

Trump’s rhetoric divides Americans and damages race relations. The division is deep and hatred is increasing. The next president will have a tough job but with different priorities. It must offer a hopeful vision, a story, and restore dignity and moral leadership to the Office. The United States and the world expect that person to unite, not divide, encourage, demean, and pull the country out of the Trump swamp. The leader must be free from corporate ties, commit to the country, not the party, and distance himself from evangelicals.

Politicians from both parties failed people who want action taken to resolve their concerns. Neither party has answers to the current problems; nor do they focus on the ills of the country, but rather on his re-election. They do not ask essential questions to find solutions; They do not focus on people’s problems, but on politics. Both parties must reassess their basic values ​​and stop doing politics and serving the people.
