Casino Sports Betting
After more than two years of debate, Connecticut’s legislature finally approved casino sports betting last month. The compact, passed by the state legislature in November 2017, includes sports betting on professional and college football, basketball, and baseball games. The compact also allows online and mobile wagering, but betting on college sports is currently illegal in the state. In late November, Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course became the first legal sports book in Pennsylvania. The move followed a landmark Supreme Court ruling that legalized online poker and daily fantasy sports, but only in casino facilities.
Since the US Supreme Court overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, lucrative casino and sportsbook operators have entered into partnership deals with major sports leagues. In October, MGM Resorts International became the first casino operator to sign a multi-year, $25 million deal with the NBA. Meanwhile, Caesars Entertainment has an individual deal with the Philadelphia 76ers. This agreement will allow both companies to cross-promote and promote events held by the 76ers and their fans.
Other casino and sports book operators have also entered into lucrative partnerships with professional sports leagues. In May 2018, MGM Resorts International became the first casino to sign an exclusive contract with the NBA, paying $25 million over three years. Caesars Entertainment, meanwhile, has signed an individual agreement with the Philadelphia 76ers, allowing the two companies to cross-promote with the 76ers and promote their products. The US Supreme Court ruled against the Professional and Amateur Sport Protection Act, so now more sportsbook and casino companies are partnering with pro athletes and professional leagues.
Casino Sports Betting Partnerships With Major League Sports
Although legal in a majority of states, many states have yet to adopt such regulations. The Washington state legislature has passed legislation to legalize casino and sports betting in 2020. During the same time, nine tribes, including the Snoqualmie Tribe, are preparing to launch sports betting in the fall. The law will not allow remote betting. However, casinos and sportsbook operators can legally offer their services on the tribal grounds, where there is no legal barrier.
The US Supreme Court’s repeal of the Profession and Amateur Sports Protection Act has made the casino and sportsbook industry a thriving industry. In fact, it has even been possible to make a living with casino sports betting. By doing business with the NBA, casinos are allowed to take advantage of the influx of new customers they have gained. The federal government has also approved casino and sports betting. Both companies have been successful in acquiring these partnerships, but there are still a few legal issues to be dealt with.
