How to improve the accuracy of students’ writing

Teaching writing is a challenging process. One of the problems that students mainly encounter is precision. It has always been considered the hardest part of using it in writing classes. The purpose of this article is to show appropriate ways to provide students with accurate writing. This is an important issue because students need to know how to construct meaningful sentences or paragraphs, which makes writing more effective and understandable. Teachers know that students write in different styles and that some of them can create precise sentences, but some of them cannot.

It is not easy to correct the same mistakes students make over and over. If you try to improve this problem by using explanations and different examples, it will be difficult to achieve success. Therefore, it would be confusing for students to jump directly to definitions or many examples explaining how to pay attention to precision when writing.

Students should be aware that learning to use precision through context will lead to effective writing. That is, writing is not just a fluency activity. If sentences are meaningless, no one is willing to read an article to the end. Teachers must make it easier for students to know how to achieve precision in a text.

The first thing to do is collect data. Use questionnaires to do this research, as this can allow students to express their ideas more freely about the problems they are having learning English. This is one of the ways that teachers can improve their students’ writing, and I think it is very important to know the needs of the students and how they want to improve their accuracy. The questionnaire should contain open-ended questions that are related to the techniques you currently use to improve the student’s writing, whether they like your teaching methods or ask you to use other techniques that would be interesting to them and motivate them to improve. After collecting the questionnaires that the students completed, read them and identify exactly what the students’ weaknesses are and how they want to improve. Then discuss this topic with your students and offer suggestions on how you could do it together.

After analyzing the data, take action on what you would change in your teaching, what methods to use that would be successful for you and also for your students.

There are some learning processes on how to write effectively in the second language. What happens when students go through these processes? Explaining all the time and exercising immediately after that is not the right choice. Use these processes and see what happens when students submit to them.

Be sure to prepare assignments that increase your awareness of how sentences appear in context. Students understand best when such sentences appear in context. Divide the students into groups. Student groups should be mixed, with good and less good students.

  • Letting students improvise is an important process because it covers many useful aspects of teaching. Ask them to write a short paragraph on a free topic. After writing, ask a few of them to read what they have written. Then try to find out which sentences were correct from your previous knowledge. It is this process that helps you and your students deepen your analysis. A second reason students need to improvise is that they will notice gaps in their writing. They will realize that there are meanings that they are unable to express. For these reasons, they will begin to look for ways to supplement the gaps in their writing that they have identified.
  • Students identify different types of sentences. They can see that different verbs are completed with different elements. This is very important for the teacher because the teacher has to draw attention to these elements to encourage the students to be aware of them. Try to facilitate student identification by providing accurate sentence lists organized into useful groups.
  • In the development process, students can make an assumption about how precision works. Provide students with a passage, how to fill in the blank, and ask each group to fill in the blanks for the words in the appropriate time. Another activity that students can use in this process is to write a short story using precise sentences.
  • Much of the learning takes place through exploration. As students are exposed to language and writing, they discover things for themselves in the classroom and outside of it. There are at least two good reasons why discovery is an important and necessary process, not just in the natural environment, but also in the classroom.
