A look back at last year’s bold baseball predictions

Predictions for the upcoming baseball season come around this time every year, an exercise that helps build excitement for another chapter in America’s oldest pastime. 2017 will almost certainly be no different, so keep an eye out for annual baseball magazines and almanacs appearing on grocery store shelves beginning in February.

One assumption that most baseball pundits and reporters agree is likely to happen this season concerns the ultimate achievement in the game. Although it has yet to happen this century, most people expect the same two clubs to reach the World Series for the second year in a row.

Last year’s champion Chicago Cubs are packed with young talent like reigning MVP Kris Bryant. On the Junior Circuit, the Cleveland Indians added free-agent slugger Edwin Encarnacion, who led the American League in RBIs last year while playing with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Many people accurately predicted the Cubs would win it all last year, but few picked the Indians to make it to the fall classic. The most interesting predictions are those that don’t necessarily focus on the World Series and are a bit bolder.

Of all the predictions from last season, sports news had the only one that used the word “Bold” to describe their list.

The article, published by Jesse Spector in sportsnews.com on January 4, 2016, it was titled Bold baseball predictions for 2017, from Strasburg to Trout. Here are five of those supposedly bold predictions for 2016, along with how accurate each one is.

bold prediction 1: After Washington failed to make the playoffs again, Stephen Strasburg signed a free agent deal with the Dodgers to form the right-handed complement to Clayton Kershaw. Both halves of this claim turned out to be false, as the Nationals clinched the NL East in mid-September and Strasburg did not go to Los Angeles. Instead, Strasburg signed a seven-year, $175 million deal that will keep him in Washington through 2023.

bold prediction 2: Mike Trout wins the American League Most Valuable Player award for the second time. Despite playing for the Los Angeles Angels, who spent most of the season in last place in the AL West, Trout had such a terrific year that he was the easy pick for MVP.

Bold Prediction 3: Dodgers and Yankees stay out of the playoffs. This prediction turned out to be half correct. New York fell short in the wild-card race, but Los Angeles won the National League West championship and battled the Cubs for the pennant.

Bold Prediction 4: Jose Bautista will be traded to the Royals at the deadline after the Blue Jays are out of the running. The slugger, who became eligible for free agency after the season, was not traded. Furthermore, it was Kansas City and not Toronto that was left out of the race. For a few months over the winter, it looked like Bautista might leave Toronto, but a new contract has kept him with the Blue Jays.

Bold Prediction 5: Tea The Reds will be worse than the Braves. After the first week of April, it seemed that this prediction would be fulfilled. Atlanta opened the year with nine straight losses, while Cincinnati won its first four games but, as predicted, the Braves finished with a better record than the Reds.
