Clean a clogged sink

At some point in the life of your pipes and fixtures, you will have to deal with a sink that drains slower than normal, sometimes not at all. If this problem only occurs with a certain sink, then you have a clogged sink. Compared to a clogged sewer, it is easier to clean the sink drain. Here’s how to do it yourself.

Let’s start with the easiest way to unclog your sink: boiling water. Although this is only effective if you have metal pipes, pouring boiling water directly down the drain can dissolve the clog and clean the drain pipe. Boil about a gallon of hot water in a large kettle or use a kettle. For the water directly on the drain and not on the porcelain. Never use hot water to unclog a sink with PVC pipes because hot water can soften these pipes and cause joints to loosen.

When boiling water couldn’t help or you have PVC drain pipes, you should use a plunger to fix a clogged sink. First, you need to know that there are two types of plungers, then cup plunger and flange plunger. To unclog a sink, you must use a bowl plunger. The flange plunger is for use on toilet bowls because they are specifically designed for it. For hygiene reasons, you don’t want to mix the two. When you have the correct plunger, seal the sink overflow outlet with a piece of duct tape. The sink overflow is located at the top of most sinks. For a kitchen sink, remove the basket strainer if you have one. You should also remove the drain plug on a bathroom sink. After doing this, fill the sink halfway with water. Then try to clear the drain pipe with quick, jerky movements. However, be careful not to break your sink.

If even the plunger fails, it’s time for the auger. To work in a sink, use a sink auger or bowl auger, sometimes also called a drum auger. With the drain plug or basket removed, insert the auger cable into the drain. Continue to extend the cable until you feel it against the obstruction and then extend it an additional twelve inches. Tighten the set screw and turn the auger crank. Use firm but gentle pressure. When you feel the obstruction clear, run more cable until you have removed all of the obstruction. Repeat this several times and rinse with hot water when the water starts to flow down the drain. A plumbing snake can also be used in place of the auger.

The use of the auger generally removes most obstructions. However, a clogged sink can become severely blocked and you may need the help of professional plumbers. When all else fails, it’s time to go to the phone book and look up plumbing companies. Many reputable companies offer plumbing services at very affordable prices. They can also help you with problems other than a clogged sink.
