In her book, “The Astronaut Wives Club,” Lily Koppel takes us back in time by reviewing the lives of astronaut wives. The time period spans just over a decade, from about 1959 to 1972. In all, there were about fifty wives. Only about seven couples were still married at the end.

As is common in our society, there were unsurprising cases of unfaithful husbands while wives continued their mission of supporting the family. There were the parties and appearances they were expected to attend. The one event we sadly rarely witness these days is a public gratitude for God’s creation. During Apollo 8 on Christmas Eve at 9:30 pm the crew delivered a message by television broadcast.

They read the creation passage from the biblical book of Genesis about heaven and earth, light and darkness, day and night, water and seas and God saw that it was good. This message was heard around the world.

That is a broadcast you wish you could remember witnessing. I would have just been a little boy. Those days have already passed in an era in which God is excluded in our country.

Lily introduces us to the four pairs of wives. There were the original seven, followed by the new nine, fourteen, and nineteen. At first, many of the families came from military backgrounds in the Air Force. Wives were used to having officers’ wife clubs. Life in the NASA community was different, so one of the women suggested that they become a mutual support group as their lives would become very intertwined.

Normally, in the civilian world an individual may not want such constant and close contact with others. Yet every wife knew that she could be the next widow if a mission was unsuccessful. In fact, there were a few deaths that occurred. They attended each family’s funerals and rejoiced at each safe return.

This entire journey happened during the decade of the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War. During this short period of time, the women went from being proper housewives of the 50s to the mod styles of the 70s. They lived with reporters in their homes. They protected each other and protected their families. They came together, with individual personalities for the good of all.

The women had their first reunion in 1991. In this time when we are so often separated from the community, we may be losing lifelong friendships based on mutual care for others. This was an era we may not see again.

Divisional makeup

The AL East has operated under the same configuration since the 1998 season. In that year, the Detroit Tigers moved out of the division to allow expansion of the Tampa Rays. The division itself now consists, in alphabetical order, of the Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Tampa Rays (formerly Devil Rays) and Toronto Blue Jays.

History

The East has been one of the most productive divisions in all of baseball, winning 5 World Series Championships in the past 11 seasons. He has also produced 7 of the 11 Wild Card playoff teams during this span. In terms of inter-division results, the New York Yankees won the division 9 times (3 World Series), followed by the Boston Red Sox (2 World Series). The only other team to win the division during this span have been the Tampa Rays. The other two division teams, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Baltimore Orioles have not won the division since the 1998 reconfiguration, although Baltimore did win the division in 1997.

Competence

This division is unique within the majors, as two of the top payroll clubs, the Yankees and the Red Sox, generally rule. With their deep pockets, they can build ball clubs that can compete every year. The other teams in the division don’t have this luxury. In order for these remaining teams (Baltimore, Tampa, and Toronto) to compete, they need to use a “replenishment” philosophy, which basically consists of teaming up for one- or two-year races and then swapping personnel when it is too costly to maintain.

Simply put, this is the American League East. In 2008, the Tampa Rays were able to win the division with a young, low-cost core. The Rays should be able to compete for at least two more seasons at a reasonable cost, making the AL East a three-team powerhouse alongside the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees.

The boss calls and tells him that the report he needs next week is due tomorrow. Your child has “forgotten” until now that he has an important homework project for tomorrow. You are forced to help them. These are just a couple of simple but fairly common challenges that most people face on a regular basis. They are external, so they are easy to recognize.

We have to understand that challenges are good for us. They help us grow (if you accept the challenge) as people and give us a higher threshold to stay calm under pressure. If we know that being challenged regularly is good for us, how do we make sure it’s happening?

The challenges don’t have to be great. It could be something as simple as not eating that little snack bar while on a diet, no matter how much it’s calling you. It’s doing your training regardless of how tired you are (unless you’re overtraining) and you don’t have the excuse that you’ll make it up the next day, because you won’t. It’s getting up an hour early every day and studying and practicing to rank in the top one percent of people in your industry.

There are a couple of keywords that correlate with rising to the challenge. One of those words is self discipline. The other is perseverance. Self-discipline is doing what is necessary, even when we really don’t want to. Perseverance is not giving up on doing what is necessary when everything seems to be going against us.

At what level do you possess these two qualities? They also happen to be great character traits. If you are known as the person who does what you say you are going to do, and you don’t stop until it’s done, people will notice. Having these two qualities is noticed very quickly by those who are above you, because they most likely have these qualities (part of the reason they are above you).

If you have a tendency to quickly “throw in the towel” when challenged, fear not. These two character traits can develop quite quickly. As I said at the beginning, small steps are just as important as big ones. Small steps can be putting your things where they belong (the same way you do with your kids) the moment you get home from work, a night out, a family event, or wherever you come from. Because things that do not take time to do, do not need time not to do.

Be responsible for your actions and have the self-discipline and perseverance to face all challenges, big and small.
