During the 1870s, two renowned inventors independently designed devices that could transmit sound through electrical wires. Those inventors were Alexander Graham Bell and Elisha Gray. Both devices were registered with the patent office within a few hours of each other. A bitter legal battle over the invention of the telephone followed, which Bell subsequently won.

The telegraph and the telephone are very similar in concept, and it was through Bell’s attempts to improve the telegraph that he had success with the telephone.

The telegraph had been a highly successful communication system for about 30 years before Bell began experimenting. The main problem with the telegraph was that it used Morse code and was limited to sending and receiving one message at a time. Bell had a good understanding of the nature of sound and music. This allowed him to perceive the possibility of transmitting more than one message on the same cable at the same time. Bell’s idea was not new, others before him had considered a multiplex telegraph. Bell offered his own solution, the “Harmonic Telegraph”. This was based on the principle that musical notes could be sent simultaneously down the same wire, if those notes differed in pitch.

By the end of 1874, Bell’s experiment had progressed enough for him to inform his close relatives of the possibility of a multiple telegraph. Bell’s future father-in-law, attorney Gardiner Green Hubbard, saw an opportunity to break the monopoly held by the Western Union Telegraph Company. He gave Bell the financial backing he needed to continue his work on the development of the multiplex telegraph. However, Bell did not mention that he and his teacher, another brilliant young electrician Thomas Watson, were developing an idea that occurred to him over the summer. This idea was to create a device that could transmit the human voice electrically.

Bell and Watson continued to work on the harmonic telegraph at the insistence of Hubbard and some other financial backers. During March 1875, Bell met with a man named Joseph Henry without Hubbard’s knowledge. Joseph Henry was the respected director of the Smithsonian Institution. He listened carefully to Bell’s ideas and offered words of encouragement. Both Bell and Watson were stimulated by Henry’s views and continued their work with greater enthusiasm and determination. In June 1875 they realized that their goal of creating a device that could transmit speech electrically would soon be fulfilled. His experiments had shown that different pitches would vary the strength of an electrical current in a wire.

Now all they had to do was build a device with a suitable membrane capable of converting those tones into varying electronic currents and a receiver to reproduce the variations and convert them back into audible form at the other end. In early June, Bell discovered that while working on his harmonic telegraph, he could hear a sound through the wire. It was the sound of a clock spring. It was on March 10, 1876 that Bell finally realized the success and communication potential of his new device. The possibilities of being able to talk over an electric cable far exceeded those of a modified telegraph system, which was essentially based on dots and dashes.

According to Bell’s notebook entry for that date, he describes his most successful experiment using his new equipment, the telephone. Bell spoke to Watson’s assistant, who was in the next room, through the instrument and said, “Mr. Watson, come here, I want to talk to you.”

Alexander Graham Bell was born on March 3, 1847 in Edinburgh, Scotland. His family were leading authorities on elocution and speech correction. He was groomed and educated to pursue a career in the same specialty. At the age of 29 in 1876 he had invented and patented the telephone. His deep understanding of sound and acoustics was of great help during the development of his phone and gave him an advantage over others working on similar projects at the time. Bell was an intellectual of quality rarely found since his death. He was a man who was always striving for success and looking for new ideas to nurture and develop.

The phone – important dates

1. 1874 – The beginning of the telephone was discovered.

2. 1876 – Alexander Graham Bell invents the telephone, beating Elisha Gray by a matter of hours.

3. 1877: The first permanent outside telephone cable was completed. It stretched a distance of only three miles. This was closely followed in the US by the world’s first commercial telephone service.

4. 1878: Viable exchange developed, allowing calls to be exchanged between subscribers instead of having direct lines.

5. 1879 – Subscribers began to be designated by numbers and not by their names.

6. 1880s – During this period, long-distance service using metal circuits expanded.

7. 1888 – Common battery system developed by Hammond V. Hayes allows a central battery to power all telephones in a central, rather than relying on each unit’s battery.

8. 1891 – First automatic dialing system invented by a Kansas City undertaker. He believed that the corrupt operators were sending their potential customers elsewhere. His goal was to get rid of the operators completely.

9. 1900: The first coin-operated telephone is installed in Hartford, Connecticut.

10. 1904 – “French telephone” developed by the Bell Company. This one had the transmitter and receiver in a simple earpiece.

11. 1911 – American Telephone and Telegraph (AT&T) acquires the Western Union Telegraph Company in a hostile takeover. They covertly bought shares of the company and eventually merged.

12. 1918 – Approximately ten million Bell system telephones were estimated to be in service in the US.

13. 1921 – The switching of a large number of calls was made possible by the use of phantom circuits. This allowed three conversations to take place on two pairs of wires.

14. 1927 – The first transatlantic service from New York to London begins. The signal was transmitted by radio waves.

15. 1936 – Research into electronic telephone exchanges began and was finally perfected in the 1960s with the Electronic Switching System (SES).

16. 1946 – The world’s first commercial mobile phone service is launched. It could link moving vehicles to a telephone network via radio waves.

17. 1947 – Microwave radio technology first used for long distance telephone calls.

18. 1947 – The transistor is invented at Bell Laboratories.

19. 1955 – Saw the beginning of the laying of transatlantic telephone cables.

20. 1962 – The world’s first international communications satellite, Telstar, is launched.

21. 1980s: The development of fiber optic cables during this decade offered the potential to carry much higher call volumes than satellites or microwaves.

22. 1980s, 1990s to present: The huge advances in microelectronic technology over the past two decades have allowed cell phone development to advance at a truly astonishing rate. A cellular (mobile) phone has its own central transmitter that allows it to receive continuous transmissions as it enters and leaves a cell.

Some people believe that the impact the phone has had on our lives is negative. Whatever your beliefs, there is no doubt that the invention and development of the telephone has had a massive impact on the way we live our lives and go about our daily business.

General coughing is completely natural and helps remove irritants or phlegm from the throat. However, a period of sustained coughing can be a problem and can be related to a variety of conditions, such as a bacterial infection, viral infection, or allergy. Most coughs related to a sinus infection, allergy, or cold are easily treated with over-the-counter medications. However, there are also a variety of home remedies that can provide soothing relief.

Here are some of the most useful home remedies for cough:

Honey

Honey is an excellent option to use as a cough suppressant. It is also one of the favorite options to relieve a sore throat. Honey is best combined with lemon to give the double action of helping with congestion and soothing irritation. Use the honey as a spread on bread or add it to herbal tea.

probiotics

Probiotics may not provide direct cough relief, but they can still help balance the buildup of bacteria in the intestines. By controlling bacteria it is possible to promote the immune system to be more effective in fighting cough. Probiotics are found naturally in a number of foods, including sourdough breads, miso soup, and some types of yogurt.

bromelain

Bromelain is a type of enzyme found in fruits such as pineapple. It is helpful in loosening mucus buildup in the throat and in suppressing cough. The best way to introduce bromelain into your diet is to drink a glass of pineapple juice two or three times a day, or simply eat a slice of fresh fruit.

This enzyme may have other helpful benefits, such as treating swelling and inflammation, as well as allergy-based sinus problems.

Mint

Peppermint leaves act as a decongestant to help break down mucus and soothe your throat. The preferred way to benefit from this remedy is a regular drink of peppermint tea. Alternatively, it is possible to inhale peppermint vapors by creating a steam bath consisting of hot water and peppermint oil. Add 150ml of hot water for every ¾ drop of oil.

thyme

Thyme is rich in flavonoids that are helpful in relaxing the throat muscles to decrease inflammation and minimize cough discomfort. A regular drink of thyme tea is a useful remedy. This is created by mixing 2 teaspoons of thyme leaves with 1 cup of hot water. Let the tea steep for 8-10 minutes before drinking.

What are the best protein bar ingredients when you’re looking to substitute them for a fast food that is truly poor nutrition? Most people recognize that a protein bar is healthier, but not everyone is. Here are the things to look for to know the difference between good and bad.

The nutrition label will tell you all the details you need to know to make a smart decision. Surprisingly, not many protein bars are actually healthy.

1 – Amount of protein
Simply put, the best protein bars have at least 20 grams of protein. As its name suggests, a protein bar should actually have a lot of protein. Calling a glorified cookie a protein bar because it has a little soy protein in it is unreasonable.

Research shows that 20 grams of protein is the optimal amount for muscle synthesis. Any less and your muscles don’t grow as well. Less is not helpful as your muscles cannot use it effectively.

In another study, a comparison was made of how hungry people felt after eating a yogurt snack with different levels of protein. Those who ate yogurt with lower amounts of protein (either grams or 5 grams) felt hungry much faster than those who ate higher levels of protein (14 grams or 24 grams). The higher dose of protein helped the test subjects feel fuller and they were able to last longer before having to eat dinner.

Not surprisingly, not many protein bars contain as much protein, mainly due to the higher costs involved.

2 – Choose whey protein
The history behind the development of protein supplements shows us that whey protein is by far the best option and it now comes in three forms. They use basic whey protein and casein (both found in milk) in the best protein bars. Lower quality bars will use plant-based soy protein as a filler to increase protein levels, but it’s not as good. They use it because it is a cheaper source. The more quality protein you find, the more seriously the manufacturer takes their product.

3 – More grams of protein than carbohydrates
Protein bars are classified as a food, so they must have more than just protein. To be the best protein bar, it must have more protein than any other ingredient.

The second most common ingredient is carbohydrates which are needed to replace glycogen in your body as an energy source. A common one is sugar alcohols which can cause gastrointestinal problems in some people. Most poor bars contain large amounts of sugar and artificial sweeteners which are bad carbs and make them more like candy bars.

A really good added ingredient in the best protein bars is fiber, especially if it’s a prebiotic super fiber (inulin).

4 – Fat is not all bad
Fats have the most calories per gram of any substance you can eat. As a meal replacement, you’ll want to look for a protein bar with more than 10 grams. Most bars are the same amount and type, so there isn’t much variation here. Manufacturers just haven’t started maximizing fat content yet. But don’t worry, with all the research on the benefits of fats, it won’t be long before they do.

5 – Less is better

A fairly easy rule of thumb is to look at the names of added ingredients and if you can’t pronounce them let alone identify them, it’s probably not good for you. What are some examples? I found all of these:

Cocoa Butter, Corn Syrup, Gelatin, Glycerin, Maltitol, Palm Kernel Oil, Partially Defatted Peanut Flour, Potassium Sorbate, Protein Blend (Whey Protein Isolate, Soy Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Isolate, milk, milk protein concentrate, calcium caseinate) – yes, this is a good mix, rapeseed and cottonseed oil, salt, soy lecithin, sucralose

The best protein bar is the one that will give you what you need and nothing that you don’t. Check the Nutrition Facts Label to make a wise choice or you can make your own too!

Title: the way of the law

•Subtitle: Learn, understand and master the law

•Author: Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.

•Publication date: 2009

•ISBN: 978-1933230-08-5

Introduction

The thoughtful reader the way of the law You will enjoy the feeling of having at your side a guide, philosopher and teacher who carefully guides you to learn, understand and master the law. To read and reread this book is to experience taking from a great teacher some of the things he has learned and getting excited about the subject as well.

the way of the law presents the conclusions drawn by Holmes after more than 30 years of legal observation, thought and practice of law. He probably wrote this essay to further discuss what began in his most famous publication, The Common Law. the way of the law it was not written as a manual on the practice of law, but as a manual to show students how to think like a lawyer; what it means to be a good lawyer; and what it means to have a successful law career.

What is this book about?

Obviously, there have been many changes and improvements in the legal profession and in legal education since Holmes wrote this essay in 1897. But in this book, Holmes is not concerned with the minute practical details of learning the law: “Theory is my subject, not practical details. Modes of teaching have been improved since my time, but skill and industry will dominate the raw material with any mode. Theory is the most important part of the dogma of law, since the architect is the most important man who participates in the construction of a house”.

Who was Holmes?

Holmes was in a position to speak on American law with great authority. After graduating from Harvard with his law degree, he taught law there. He then served for 20 years on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. He was then appointed to the Supreme Court of the United States as an Associate Justice, where he served for 30 years. Despite his fancy titles and his extensive experience, Holmes never speaks disparagingly to the reader of this book. Holmes’s evident love for the law and his desire to help others understand this attraction comes through to the reader loud and clear. Holmes uses many easy to understand examples throughout the essay to demonstrate his point.

The “Bad Man Theory” and “Morality Vs. Law”

The quality and simplicity of Holmes’s writing is reason enough to attract readers, especially law students. His illustrations are obviously chosen from extensive experiences and are like vivid images projected on a miniature screen. Everyone’s favorite illustration is usually Holmes’s explanation of his “bad man theory.” Holmes explains “that a bad man has as much reason as a good man for wishing to avoid an encounter with the public force, and therefore the practical importance of the distinction between morality and law can be seen.” In other words, a bad man will only want to know what the material consequences of his conduct will be; he will not be motivated by morality or conscience. This example sets the stage for most of the book. Holmes goes to great lengths to give examples of the differences between morality and law.

History and Tradition

A large part of the book discusses the importance of history, or tradition, as an important part of the study of law. Holmes tells us that “The rational study of law is still very much the study of history. History must be part of the study, because without it we cannot know the precise scope of the rules that it is our duty to know. It is part of the study rational, because it is the first step towards an enlightened skepticism, that is, towards a deliberate reconsideration of the value of those rules”.

Isn’t this book outdated?

The hasty reader might assume that this book was written too long ago to be of practical use to a modern law student or lawyer. But a careful reader will immediately see that Holmes has much to offer us today. Holmes summarizes his entire book in two short paragraphs:

“I take it for granted that no hearer of mine will misunderstand what I have to say as the language of cynicism. The law is the external witness and repository of our moral life. Its history is the history of the moral development of the race. Its practice, despite of popular jokes, it tends to make good citizens and good men. When I emphasize the difference between law and morality I do so with reference to only one end, that of learning and understanding the law.you definitely must master its specific marks, and that is why I ask you for the moment to imagine yourselves indifferent to other greater things.”

“If a man is engaged in the law, it pays to be a master of it, and to be a master of it means to look straight through all the dramatic incidents and discern the true basis of the prophecy. Therefore, it is good to have accurate knowledge. notion of what we understand by law, by right, by duty, by malice, intention and negligence, by property, by possession, etc.

conclusion

Those of you who read this book before entering law school should make an effort to reread it several times during your law school studies. It is then that you will begin to understand more than the way of the law each time you read it, and you will really begin to understand what Holmes was trying to tell us, on a deeper level, and enjoy his message all the more.

Who surfer? Surfrider is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1984 by a group of environmental surfers, their ultimate goal is to help keep our world safe and clean from ocean to ocean. The roots of this visionary group began in Malibu, California, and have grown into a global movement inspiring more than 50,000 members to preserve the beauty and quality of our beaches and oceans around the world.

This non-discriminatory organization strives to maintain a healthy and open relationship between natural ecosystems and the free and public use of these watercourses and beaches, maintaining a low-impact effect and allowing swimming and surfing to be enjoyed without limitations. Surfrider believes in educating our youth about the effects we have on our environment through research and application of conservation and activism.

The difference between the Surfrider organization and others is that the members are made up of surfers, swimmers, divers, and other people whose lives center around the oceans. These people are immediately affected by the conditions of these natural ecosystems and therefore feel a great passion for their lives. cause. How would you react if someone dumped their trash in your driveway? Or down the sidewalk you run on? Of course, your response to this would be quick and complete, because the problem would be directly affecting your life.

Surfrider is committed to its cause achieving many accomplishments over the years, winning the national Renew America Award for its nationwide efforts to clean up coastlines, passing the federal BEACH Act in 2000 to require uniform national monitoring of water quality, as well as winning the second largest clean water law lawsuit in US history in 1991, against two pulp mills in Humboldt County that were charged with more than 40,000 violations of the law. This group backs up their beliefs and moves on.

Surfrider also supports other ecological organizations, determined to help our earth maintain its natural beauty and ecosystems, Dot Eco is an active group made up of entrepreneurs, scientists, celebrities and others who can use their wide range of influence. to promote the protection and conservation of our planet. They have supported the Dot Eco initiative to establish the .eco top-level domain. This new initiative will donate more than 50% of domain registration revenues to fund scientific initiatives and research on climate change, ocean analysis, economic policy and other areas related to the environment. Surfrider supports each and every one who strongly believes in this and strives to continue their cause, keeping the planet safe. We only have one home. Let’s keep it healthy for generations to come.

In the fifth line of the poem “Design”, an invisible hand enters. The characters are “mixed” like ingredients in an evil potion. Some force doing the mixing is behind the scenes. The characters themselves are innocent enough, but when put together, their whiteness and shroud-like appearance are overpowering. There is something diabolical about the spider’s feast.

The “morning right” echoes the word rite, a ritual – in this case, apparently, a black mass or a Withces Sabbath. The simile in line seven is more ambiguous and more difficult to describe. The foam is white, frothy, and delicate, something found in a stream in the woods or on a beach after a wave recedes. However, in the natural world, foam can also be ugly: foam from a polluted stream or the mouth of a rabid dog. The dualism in nature, its beauty and its horror, is there in that one simile.

So far, the poem has portrayed a small, frozen scene, with the dimpled killer holding his victim as innocently as a child holds a kite. Frost has already hinted that nature may be, as Radcliffe Squires suggests, “nothing but an ash-white plain without love, faith, or hope, where ignorant appetites chance upon each other.” Now, in the last six lines of the sonnet, Frost comes out and makes his point directly.

What else could bind these things stark and pale as death “but the design of darkness to horrify?” the question is clearly rhetorical; we’re meant to reply, “Yeah, it looks like there’s evil design at work here!” I take the penultimate line to mean: “What except a design so dark and sinister that it horrifies us?” “Pass”, by the way, is the second play on words in the poem: it sounds like a mortuary cloth or a shroud. Directed carries the suggestion of a steering wheel or rudder that some pilot had to control. Like the word brought, it implies that some unseen force traced the paths of the spider, the healer, and the moth, so that they would arrive together.

Periodically, a homeowner who is just looking for information calls or writes me with a question about how to measure (or map) their own property. A common question that comes up many times is, “How do I get my property records?” The second question that is asked, usually after they have your description in hand, is, “How do I read this?”

People ask these questions for many reasons. Some wish to fence or fence their land, others out of pride of ownership, desire for knowledge, or sometimes to protect themselves from the threat of invasion. The information in this article won’t make you an expert overnight, and you’ll want a certified surveyor for any legal issues you may face, but it will help you better understand your property.

When reading your property description, you are reading about the imaginary lines that establish the “demarcation” (boundary) between your property and its neighbors, usually referred to as “adjuncts.” An adjudicator can be another private property owner or a government agency that has a title interest, such as the street in front of your property.

You will see the property description in many formats. The most common are Lots, Meters or Limits. In some cases, the description may be a combination of the three above.

Briefly, when a larger parcel of land is divided into two or more parcels, it is called a subdivision. The owner is subdividing the property into lots. The description of each lot is usually created through a government plating procedure. This creates a process called “simultaneous conveyance” because all parcels (lots), at the time of county registration, share the same title rights.

For example, a property can be described as follows:

Lot 1, SMITH SUBDIVISION, City of Wheat Ridge, Colorado.

On the other hand, a description of Metes is written “in sequence,”with the lines that form the perimeter of the property, while a Boundary description describes the boundaries of the property requesting the description of “attached”. Examples of an attachment would be – “Bounded on the west by County Road 119about him east by the Jones property,” or maybe a natural limit like “the river Plata”. These two types of descriptions are considered “sequential transports”, in which there are minor and major titles between adjoining lands.

To read the description of your property in the case of the lot description format, you would need a copy of the “Recorded“map. If you don’t have one, you can purchase a copy at your county seat. Look for the “Office of the Secretary and Registrar“. Most subdivision plates will provide you with the necessary geometry, as shown next to your lot lines. Modern plates require that the direction and length of the lines that comprise the perimeter of your lot must be in the platform map, but for some platform maps, you may not find this. aspects Y distances for each of the property lines. The bearing will indicate the direction. Distance (line length) is usually written in units of feet and are horizontal values. Your property deed will identify the lot’s particular nomenclature, and the flat map will demonstrate the geometric size, shape and location along with bearings and distances that uniquely identify your lot.

We will simplify the reading for you. Think of a compass. The arrow header provides direction with numbers at the end of the arrow giving the amount of deviation from north. The bearings are deliberately placed in four quadrants of the circle. Bearings on your lot will almost always begin with the letter N or S, meaning North or South, with numbers in between, and end with the letters E or W, meaning East or West. For example, a heading of N 44 E means traveling along that line in the northeast quadrant of your compass on a heading 44 degrees east of north. N 45 W means 45 degrees west of north. The beauty of a batch description is that all lines are created simultaneously.

to read a Description of the measureslike the example below, it is important to know that the sequence cannot be read out of order. If bearings and distances are given, then they should be read in the order in which they are printed. Sometimes the description will start with “From.. .” That’s your starting point.

For example, you can see your description as: Beginning at a point 247 feet east of Jacobs Fork; thence N 51 W, 210 feet; thence N 44 E, 204 feet to a pine tree; thence S 48 E, 210 feet to cement post; thence S 43 W, 204 feet to starting point, containing 0.98 acres, more or less.

There may be other ways to provide the direction (bearing) of the property, such as using angles from the previous property line. They can be recited as inner, outer, right, left, extension (continuation), and many others.

to read a Description of the limits, the order of the lines being described does not usually matter. If it is bounded on the north by a river, on the east by Highway 1, on the south by Jones, and on the west by Smith, the order as presented makes no difference. This type of description is often the most expensive and time-consuming to define, because to properly survey, you or the surveyor must investigate all other adjacent properties in the boundary description.

Again, the information in this article is not meant to make you an expert, and before setting out the expense to put in that shed slab or that first post hole, we recommend that you have the property inspected by certified professionals. However, with a little understanding, time, and a decent compass, just about anyone can understand the overall design of their property.

The effects of good nutrition on the body are just as visible as the effects of poor nutrition on the body. The difference is that poor nutrition can destroy the body, while good nutrition only supports and strengthens the body. Therefore, the best goal in life is to maintain a lifestyle that promotes good nutrition. This will cause many positive effects, including the following 5 effects of good nutrition.

5 Effects of Good Nutrition:

1. Maintain normal body function.

This includes better learning, proper balance and pH in body tissues, to stabilize and regulate body systems such as blood pressure, rebuild tissues, and maintain proper blood sugar levels.

2. Maintain a healthy weight

This includes adequate blood pressures, less likely to allow diseases such as diabetes, heart malfunction

3. Prevent diseases

This includes prevention of cancer, tissue diseases, parasitic invasions, bacterial infections

4. Pass on a good start to future generations

Healthy babies, immune system, healthy pregnancy

5. Provides stress relief.

Reduce medication side effects, boost the immune system, maintain calm and coping ability

If you can enjoy these 5 effects of good nutrition, you’ll be well on your way to a better, healthier body that can function properly.

A key to getting good nutrition regularly is to avoid excess. Balance your food intake between the main groups and eat appropriate amounts. You need a balance of protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other nutrients. A multivitamin can be helpful if you are unsure about your food intake, but it is not a substitute for eating properly. Water is essential for the functioning of the body, the transport of nutrients to the cells and the management of waste elimination.

You can obtain and follow the Standard Daily Food Pyramid and the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) published by the government. It is adjusted for age because dietary needs change as a person ages.

This pyramid is made up of nutritional groups of: calories, carbohydrates, fats, proteins, fiber, vitamins and minerals, and includes lists of antioxidants and herbs that are beneficial for health.

In addition to age, the body’s nutritional needs change with the use of medications or disorders and diseases that affect the body’s ability to meet those needs or interfere with the absorption or intake of nutrients from food.

There are more than the above 5 effects of good nutrition, but these go a long way in getting you started on a healthy lifestyle if you pay attention. By the way, if you can’t pay attention, you may need better nutrition! Avoid excess sweets and highly refined foods, because they can cause bacterial excesses that, if not controlled, can have a lethal result (Candida). By providing the proper fuel (food) for your body, you allow it to function at its optimal capacity, keeping you healthy, happy and fit for years and years, with benefits that extend even to the next generation.

Ahhh my Oakland Raiders. I have been a lifelong Raiders fan and it pains me to see what my beloved team has become. The Raiders went 5-11 in 2008 leaving Raider Nation with another year of heartbreak. I have written (and will continue to write) several articles on the Raiders’ prospects as a team heading into 2009. However, for the sake of this article, I will examine the Raiders from a fantasy perspective only. With that in mind, let’s look at Silver and Black’s fantasy potential for 2009.

It’s no secret that I’m not convinced JaMarcus Russell is an NFL quarterback and appreciate him even less as a fantasy quarterback. To be blunt, Russell has shown me and other Raider Nation members very little in his 3 years in the league. Obviously he’s got the cannon arm, but it takes a lot more than that to be a successful NFL QB, just ask Jeff George. Also, Russell hasn’t displayed much of a work ethic since the Raiders invested virtually their entire franchise with him three years ago. I honestly wanted and still wish the Raiders had drafted Brady Quinn instead of Russell as I think Quinn has all the tools to be a good quarterback in this league for a long time if the Browns ever give him the opportunity. . I just don’t see that outside of Russell and apparently the Raiders are also getting worried or they wouldn’t have signed free agent QB Jeff Garcia to “back up” Russell. I have news for you. If Russell starts slowly, which is a real possibility given the Raiders have an absolutely brutal schedule this year, Garcia will be there. Until Russell shows some fire under his ass, don’t go near him on draft day this August, even as the No. 2 QB.

As low as I am on Russell I am as high on the Raiders running game and in my opinion if the Raiders hit the ball all year using the 3 headed monster that they currently have on the roster I really think this team can go 8-8. First, Darren McFadden WILL WIN this year with a total of 1100-1300 yards and 12 total TDs. He counts on it. Why am I so sure about that? A couple of different reasons. First, Dmac is too good. His rookie campaign was derailed in large part by a stubborn toe injury that hampered him for virtually the entire year. Make no mistake about it. In terms of raw talent, McFadden is better than Chris Johnson, Matt Forte and Steve Slaton. Additionally, Dmac has been proactive regarding the aforementioned toe injury by having the Raiders coach place a steel plate in his shoe to help prevent such an injury from reoccurring. Ultimately, the Raiders hired strike specialist Lorenzo Neal specifically to block McFadden and help throw his run. McFadden is the real deal. Pick him between rounds 3 and 5 as RB #2 and watch him explode.

In addition to McFadden, the Raiders also sport two other good running backs in Justin Fargas and Michael Bush. If I’m a betting man, I’m thinking Fargas is going to be the odd man out this year. If McFadden gets hot early on, which I think he will, Fargas won’t see much of the field. Bush, however, will still have a role. The nation saw exactly what Bush is capable of as a running back in the Week 17 finale against the Buccaneers when he rushed for 177 yards and 2 TDs in a game Tampa needed to win to make the playoffs and ultimately cost the coach. Tampa boss and former Raiders Head Coach Jon Gruden his job. If it hadn’t been for the broken leg he suffered in Louisville, Bush certainly would have been a top-10 pick and the Raiders stole him outright in the fourth round a few years ago. Bush is sure to continue to see work this year as a goal line/short yard rusher and don’t be afraid to try it with a pick in the 12th rounds and beyond. As for Fargas, I personally wouldn’t waste an election on him because, unless McFadden gets hurt this year, I don’t see him putting up any kind of statistically worthwhile numbers.

Unlike the Raiders’ running game, the team’s receiving corps is clouded with controversy and question marks. Al Davis surprised me and the rest of the world when he selected WR Darrius Heyward-Bey over Michael Crabtree and Jeremy Maclin. It’s obvious to me and everyone else that really the only variable that matters to Mr. Davis when he evaluates players is the 40-yard dash time. I will not go into Davis here as it is not the proper format as this is a Raiders related article from a fantasy perspective only. Does Heyward-Bey have any fantasy potential for 2009? Yes. Would he cheat on him? Yes, but not before round 13-14 and if someone like Maclin or Percy Harvin is still on the board, I’d take anyone before Heyward-Bey. However, from a fantasy standpoint, Heyward-Bey has a few things that work for him. First of all, he’s already the No. 1 receiver on the team and Mr. Davis has made his intentions of trying to get the ball deep to the speedster from the start perfectly clear. If you’re in a league like mine that rewards you with bonus points for long TD runs and receptions, then it’s worth trying to do a late-round shuttlecock on Heyward-Bey because the law of averages says he’ll catch at least a few bombs. of Russell this year. Another receiver who could see an increase in production from him if Russell develops the way the franchise needs him is Johnny Lee Higgins. Higgins represents a good talent both at the WR position and in the return of kicks/punts. Similar to Heyward-Bey, try Higgins late and if Russell can finally get his head out of his butt, you may see some dividends from him as the year goes on. Chad Shillings and Florida rookie Louis Murphy are 2 other Raiders receivers to watch this fall.

TE Zach Miller could be the biggest beneficiary if Russell advances. Miller really started to make a name for himself last year by catching 56 passes for 778 yards and 1 TD. Both receptions and yards led Raiders receivers by a mile and while the 1 TD is disappointing, Miller will surely improve on that in 2009. Miller along with Chicago’s Greg Olson are my 2 dark TE candidates for next season . Olson has the better quarterback, but Russell and Miller seemed to form good chemistry last year, and if that continues, Miller has the talent to be an elite NFL TE.

The Raiders’ daylight saving time is to be avoided at all costs until the unit proves otherwise. Last year the team was ranked 31st against the race and they were beaten to the ground all year. The IL was a complete mess and LB Tommy Kelley, who normally anchors the unit, had a bad year. The secondary is led by one of the best coverage cornerbacks in the game, if not the best, in Nnamdi Asomugha, who just signed a contract extension this offseason. Asomugha is the modern Lester Hayes and is truly one of the best CBs in the NFL. The bottom line, though, is that it goes without saying that there are much better options at the DST position than the Raiders and they should not be considered under any circumstances under any format. In leagues where kickers are rewarded with bonus points for 50+ FG yards, kicker Sebastian Janikowski may be of some value since he still has the same leg he had coming out of FSU.

To wrap up my review of the Raiders, I strongly suggest we take a hard look at McFadden as the No. 2 RB for 2009. I’m telling you right now he’s going to have a great year and I like TE Miller too. As for the other Raiders, there’s really nothing to get excited about from a prospective fantasy. Next up: The Kansas City Chiefs.
