Month: May 2023

Good communication is as invigorating as a decent cup of coffee…and just as hard to sleep after.

After meeting with potential clients for the first time, I play the meeting on a continuous loop… all night.

If you’ve arranged the meeting, then you’ve got your foot in the door, now all you have to do is impress them.

Here are some suggestions:

  1. Most importantly do your homework on your client/your company/market you are in, a Google search takes seconds but can reap great rewards.

  2. Choose your meeting place wisely, if it’s a cafe, is there a quiet room you can use, out of the way so you can talk in peace? If not, is your space free of clutter yet reflective of your personality? Can you show off your talent without it being too obvious?

  3. Dress smart/professional, but not out of character; you should also feel comfortable.

  4. Be aware of your body language – you may be nervous, but try not to show it. Take a deep breath, smile and enjoy it.

  5. Start with small talk and don’t go straight to business as you will overwhelm the situation.

  6. Buy decent coffee – I know we own a coffee business, but I cannot stress enough how little effort it takes to serve amazing tasting coffee.
  7. Now you can talk business – make sure you’ve also researched your competitors and the industries aligned with your business.

  8. Gently critique your business: what are they good at, what are they not good at, list how you can help them improve.

  9. Ask them what they like about your business, what they don’t like, and what they are looking for.

  10. Ask open-ended questions, take notes, and repeat your answers so you know the information is correct.

  11. Only say “Yes” or agree to work with them if you are 100% sure you can deliver.

If the client has taken the time to meet with you, they may want to work with you.

Take whatever information you have, write it down into a contractual agreement, making sure both parties understand the fine print…and are both happy with it.

Amazing coffee isn’t expensive and if you do it right, your prospect will be impressed from the start.

The most important thing to remember: customers just want you to be able to solve their problems.

Have you done that?

While Rome burns, all Americans care about is their stuff and how much they can hoard. This idea is embedded in modern society. It begins with young children learning the word, mine. I was raised in a different generation and if that word came out of my mouth, it would take the tar out of me. Now the new parents think that their little prince/princess can do no wrong and he is cute. This behavior has continued into adolescence until a boy gets his driver’s license and has the crazy idea that he is owed a new car. Well, all the other kids get one, so why shouldn’t they? Then it’s time to go to college and it’s not good enough to go to college, but a prestigious four-year college is more suitable for the way they’ve been raised. My friends, this is the generation of rights and it’s all about self gratification and collecting more stuff. Instead of going into endless debt, these kids should be asking the question: Is college really worth it? In America today, this entitlement generation is creating a new bubble, it’s the student loan bubble. In 2013, student loan debt topped $1 trillion, and without jobs to help these grads make the payments, a dangerous bubble was created that is about to burst. Currently, $124 billion of this debt is more than 90 days past due. But most kids don’t understand that they can’t even file for bankruptcy on this debt later in life if they have to. Sure bankruptcy could be in their future, but this debt will follow them forever. So one thing is for sure, they will have their education and their debt after they file bankruptcy, so they need not worry about losing that at least.

In this self-absorbed generation, these people will try to avoid filing for bankruptcy at all costs because they fear losing all their property if they do. Truth be told, this is one of the things that should be filed under the myths and legends of filing for bankruptcy. I think the most corrupt creditors and debt collectors love to tell people stories about what will happen to them if they file bankruptcy. This could be one of those stories that they tell, because they know that if a person files a return, he won’t even be able to contact that debtor anymore. If they can scare the debtor away, they will stick with the minimum payments on their debts until they can no longer afford it. Although many of these people shouldn’t hold onto their belongings so tightly, it’s rare for a person to be wiped out in a bankruptcy filing. When Congress created bankruptcy, they needed to make bankruptcy exemption laws that would allow a person to keep a generous amount of property or else the person would not have the fresh start that bankruptcy promises.

In recent years, many Americans have exercised their right to file for bankruptcy because of what happened to the economy after the housing bubble burst. People who file for bankruptcy can be sure that they will not lose all their property when they file for bankruptcy. This idea that the bankruptcy trustee wants to go to the filer’s house with a big truck and take everything to the flea market is completely false. In today’s economy, the trustee will weigh the cost against the reward in taking any non-exempt property. Once again, it is a good idea to hire a bankruptcy attorney to prepare your bankruptcy petition because he will know the ins and outs of the code and will be able to protect the maximum amount of property in the filing. There are two types of bankruptcy exemptions that an individual can select, first there are the federal exemptions which are very generic, then there are the state exemptions that most people choose. Although bankruptcy is under federal law, each state has its own bankruptcy exemptions and laws added to the code. The reason states have their own bankruptcy exemption laws is because sometimes property can be region specific. For example, there might be an exemption in Kansas to protect a tractor that would not apply to someone who lives in New York City. In general, it is still best to let a bankruptcy attorney make the decision of which exemptions to use.

Lord where do I begin with this one!

My fellow ladies. I am disappointed and totally disgusted. Because? Because LinkedIn has become an online version of a New York City street.

When I joined LinkedIn, I did so because I wanted to network with other professionals and advance my career. But instead, LinkedIn has become a place guys go to yell at me about my looks instead of my portfolio.

I will elaborate.

This is a message from LinkedIn that a friend of mine received last week. My friend is an attractive blonde UCSB grad and tech recruiter in San Francisco. She had never met or heard of this guy before; this message was completely unexpected.

Subject: Nice smiles

What a nice smile you have here (in a nice profile) you look resplendent in such a way that it intrigues everyone who sees your profile. In fact, I was browsing my connections list when I found yours, clicked and couldn’t resist saying hello after seeing such a unique beauty.

I sincerely apologize for writing you such a personal message, as I understand that this professional networking site prohibits it, but just like I said, I couldn’t resist saying hi.

Please, do you mind keeping in touch? I would love to know more about you.

Hope to hear from you soon.

THE WARMEST THOUGHTS.

If this had been said in the workplace, it would be classified as sexual harassment.

While many of us will probably just laugh, why treat a professional networking site less professional than the workplace?

Women have worked hard and have come this far to be treated equally at work.

Now, this is not to say that women don’t flirt with guys on LinkedIn, too. And not all men are creepy LinkedIn nerds. This is just my personal experience. However, after talking to some friends of mine, I KNOW this happens regularly with many women.

Guys (and girls), if you find yourself wanting to flirt with someone, that’s okay. We all need love.

Only the next time you want to get nervous, follow these instructions:

LinkedIn

Download Tinder

Download OKCupid

Download Coffee Meets Bagel

Troll as much as your heart can handle

Do you see how many alternatives there are? They are really dating sites. Unlike LinkedIn. Heck, OKCupid even has a filter so you can find someone within a specific income range. See, it is much easier to keep online dating messages within an online dating site.

Unless, of course, LinkedIn has a “sexy woman” filter and “at least an 8 out of 10”. Is it possible that it is a Premium feature?

And of course, if you want even more reliable advice, GET OUT OF THE COMPUTER! Hit a girl in person. As long as it’s friendly and fun, we love that shit!

one last little thing

Therefore, to prove my point, I did a little experiment of my own.

Just by posting a photo of myself as a model once a day for the last 5 days, I have received over 1600 new connection requests. ALL MEN! My profile views increased from 200 per day to over 1,000 per day. And of course the most disrespectful messages I’ve ever seen! It is beyond deplorable. But hey, at least the creeps are consistent!

Please feel free to comment, good or bad.

During the first part of the year, a tour of the garden allows us to contemplate the remains of the outdoor cooking activities of recent years. Often our grills are left out in the open, uncovered, and in many cases have seen much better days.

It’s this time of year that we start thinking about cooking our favorite food on the grill outside during the warmer months with our friends and family, but before we’re ready to start throwing charcoal and fire starters on the grill, it’s Time to shift our attention to cleaning our kitchen equipment so things start hygienically.

Barbecue cleaning methods

wire brushing

A stiff wire brush is a great help in cleaning your grill. Just give your rack a thorough scrub before and after each use. If you’ve used oil to coat your grill, cleaning the grill should be easy with just a brush. Brass-bristled brushes are especially good for cleaning porcelain-coated grills, as they won’t damage the porcelain.

grill stones

Grill stones are specially designed to help remove grease and stuck-on food from the grill. They look like a large pumice stone with a handle for easy scrubbing and is also an excellent heat carrier like volcanic rock, ceramic tile, etc. The main difference to a stone grill is that it has no holes and due to this feature it greatly reduces the chance of flare-ups and poor cooking. Grilling stones are capable of withstanding incredible heat, up to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. Grill stones are ideal for use on most grill shapes and sizes, as the stone’s design allows it to work with almost any grill format.

Burned

This is one of the most common methods for cleaning barbecue grills/grills. All you have to do is leave your barbecue on after cooking once you have removed all the food. Once you have done this for about a quarter of an hour, allow the grill to cool down for about 5 minutes and then use an old trowel or flat piece of metal and gently scrape both sides of the grill to remove any tough sticky residue. . Keep in mind that ceramic grills can be very easily damaged if too much force is applied with sharp objects, so be careful which tools you choose.

If you have an old metal kitchen utensil, such as an egg turner, these are ideal tools to make the job safer and easier.

However, you should be careful that the grill manufacturer does not prohibit this method lest you accidentally void your warranty.

Ensure your own safety if you use this method by wearing a pair of suitable oven mitts or special heat resistant gloves.

Soaking

If all else fails, letting your grill grates soak in warm water will help loosen stubborn dirt and food debris. This can be good for really cleaning the edges of the shelves, which are often difficult to scrub properly.

Grease the grill

A good way to reduce the pain of cleaning a barbecue is to prevent the worst of the residue from sticking to the grill in the first place. To do this, coat your grill with a layer of oil before you start cooking. This will help prevent food from burning and sticking to the grill and will also make cleaning up the grill much easier afterwards. Remember to only spray oil on a cold grill. If sprayed on a fire or a hot grill, the oil will ignite and could cause serious injury.

steam cleaning

If you use your barbecue several times throughout the year, why not invest in a steam cleaner? This will speed up the time needed to clean the barbecue after use and can be very effective; So if you’re fed up with scrubbing to remove barbecue residue, an investment in a steam cleaner can go a long way and save you time.

When you’re done cooking your food, soak an old newspaper in water and place it on top of your hot grill with the lid on tight. After about three quarters of an hour, open the lid and wipe out the residue. Don’t let the newspaper sit on the grill rack for too long, as it will dry out and create even more work for you.

Preventive measures to keep your barbecue clean

Using a cover on your barbecue

The number one way to help keep your barbecue clean is to simply buy or make a cover to put on your unit while it’s not in use. To give your barbecue some protection from the elements, it’s a good idea to cover it with a plastic sheet, or preferably a manufacturer’s cover that’s specifically designed to do the job right, as these generally have a tighter fit and are more effective.

During the winter months, you can also remove the grill and store it in a dry place, away from moisture and the elements. This will slow down the rate at which rust forms, and you will benefit most from doing it in conjunction with the lubrication method mentioned above.

This helps inhibit rust during the months when your barbecue is not in regular use.

The sheet “tray”

Now that you have the basics of cleaning your indoor grill, you should now turn your attention to cleaning the inside of your grill.

After several uses, there’s a fair amount of dirt left on the bottom that hasn’t particularly benefited from being outside in the elements. Over time, this buildup can become unsanitary and become an additional chore to deal with.

Charcoal grills suffer the most from this, and the best way to deal with this without breaking the bank is to first give the inside of the grill a good clean by removing any hard, dry residue first with an old dustpan and brush (something you of us should have it in the garage somewhere), and then remove any dirt stuck to the edges of the grill with general household cleaners. There are many barbecue-specific cleaners available, although these can cost two to three times as much as regular household cleaners. Feel free to try them, though from experience, regular cleaners get the job done adequately.

Just spray on a decent amount of the liquid and allow it to absorb properly for about 10 minutes, then gently scrape off the worst of the buildup with a plastic scraper. Once you’ve gotten this far, you’re ready to place on the kitchen foil.

Use good quality kitchen paper, the thicker the better, and line it in three layers and turn the edges to look like a tray. Place this in the bottom of your grill, and then add a layer of sand about a quarter inch deep. This will help soak up the grease and excess juices that run off the grill during cooking, and will make your life MUCH easier in the long run.

After several uses, simply remove the entire tray and discard. Quickly brush and wipe down the inside of the grill, and insert another of your homemade aluminum pans to keep your grill clean for future uses.

If you don’t mind spending a little extra money, you can use an aluminum catering pan and throw it away after a few uses… just use common sense and dispose of it when it looks like it’s past its prime.

Another tip you can try is to pour your leftover coffee back on the grill. Clean with a dry cloth. For a really good clean, spray the grill with your regular oven cleaner and leave it in a plastic garbage bag overnight. Hose down the next day and you should have a gleaming grill ready to go.

You can also add vinegar or dishwashing lotion to the water for extra cleaning power.

Another widely used grill cleaning method is to simply rub the grill in the sand. This will remove most of the fat etc. Once you have done this, hose down the grill. Depending on how caked the grill is, you may have to repeat this process 2-3 times, but it’s well worth the effort.

Gas taps often become difficult to use during the colder months, causing the plastic knobs to crack and, in the worst case, break. Remove the plastic knobs and spray the area with a light oil to loosen them. You can also try using a small amount of machine oil on each tap and then coating them with a light grease to prevent the oil from escaping.

If one or more of your burners do not produce a strong blue flame, you may have a clogged gas jet.

If you lift up the burner on the barbecue, you’ll see little brass nozzles called venturis. These are like a small raised walnut with a small hole through them. They can be simply removed with a small key. If you cannot clear the clog, buy new nozzles from a specialist supplier.

Insects tend to nest inside the venturis when not in use and the openings can become blocked. Use a venturi brush to clean the venturi openings. If you’re not going to be using your grill for a long time, consider using some venturi covers to keep something out.

Reconnect the gas supply and check the connections by coating them with a 1:1 mixture of dishwashing liquid and water. Any failure in the gas supply will be easily detected at this point and you will know that you will need to do something to fix it. You can start by tightening the connections or replacing the seals, and if this doesn’t work then you should replace the faulty unit per the manufacturer’s instructions or return it to your local service center.

Barbecues with wooden carts can be kept in good condition by re-greasing them once a year. All you have to do is lightly sand the cart with a high grit paper and then use a suitable furniture oil or specially formulated BBQ cart oil. This will not only absorb oil stains on the top of the cart, but will also help prevent new stains from forming.

Volcanic rocks also need care, if you use them. Be sure to clean or renew them every year, as they always get clogged with grease and oil. Remember to discard the old litter from the drip tray, wipe the tray clean and spray it with cooking oil before lining it with aluminum foil. Place fresh washed sand on top of the aluminum foil to help keep it clean.

If your volcanic rocks show signs of cracking you can replace them, you may consider replacing them with porcelain briquettes. These disc-shaped “rocks” are less porous than volcanic rocks and are considerably easier to keep clean.

If you live near the sea or in an area where the density of salty air is high, please note that you will need to take extra time and precautions to ensure that your grill is not unduly exposed to the elements which will invariably lead to component failure and rust. .

Wash the outer surface periodically with fresh water and dry immediately for best results.

Your taxes have been filed and you feel a sense of relief. You don’t have to go through that tedious process of gathering receipts and paperwork until next year! HURRAH! Throw a party, use your tax return in a silly way, and do whatever makes you happy that it’s all over for another year.

Goal WAIT! Don’t get too comfortable. I’m willing to bet that “year-end madness” has taught you a few things. In fact, are you willing to go through the same process next year that you just went through this year?

If you haven’t figured it out yet, here’s something you need to know: ACCOUNTING IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF RUNNING YOUR BUSINESS. Not something to be taken lightly or only thought about at tax time!

In fact, now may be the BEST time to rethink your process. What could make it less complicated next year? What can you start doing right now to put systems in place that will save you a lot of time (and money) come tax season 2010?

Now that we’ve agreed that you need to make some changes, what’s next? How do you decide if you can set up and make the books yourself, or if you should hire help?

Based on the qualities I’ve seen in my clients over the years, I came up with 9 categories to help you explore whether you should hire help:

1. Organization:

A. Do It Yourself if: You love when everything has its place and is easy to find. You keep a tax file throughout the year.

b. Hire help if: You have receipts stuffed in every purse pocket, coat pocket, nook and cranny. It took a while to get them all together for your taxes!

2. Archiving and record keeping:

A. Do it yourself if: You have a wonderful system for business paperwork.

b. Hire help if: You are a person who “goes with the flow.” Someday you’ll sit down and clean up the mess, probably in January or February 2011, just in time to pay taxes again!

3. Hours:

A. Do It Yourself If: The hours are amazing, you love to plan ahead.

b. Hire Help If: Life doesn’t run on a schedule…but you have to realize that taxes are due on the SAME day every year!

4. Current file drawer:

A. Do it yourself if: You can open it easily and the folders are well labeled.

b. Hire help if: When you open it, receipts spill all over the floor. Oh, and you found some that should have been on the 2008 tax return.

5. My computer records:

A. Do it yourself if: You have QuickBooks installed and love to enter all your transactions on a regular basis. Your tax accountant loves it too&.

b. Hire help if: You bought QuickBooks based on the recommendation of your exhausted tax accountant. Now what?

6. My bank reconciliations:

A. Do it yourself if: They are ready the day you get the bank statement and you go crazy when they reconcile to the penny!

b. Hire help if: You have to ask “what is a bank reconciliation?” He gets statements from the bank and puts them in a folder where they are forgotten. You write checks based on what the bank tells you is the balance when you call!

7. My plan for the end of the year:

A. Do it yourself if you: Print QuickBooks reports for tax purposes.

b. Hire help if: You have a box where you throw away every piece of paper you receive. You hope the tax accountant will use her magical powers to solve everything for the next year!

8. When I think about accounting:

A. Do it yourself if: It sounds like fun. You love knowing what Accounts Receivable is at any given time.

b. Hire help if: You’d rather _____ (fill in the blank) than sit down and do the bookkeeping!

9. What my time is worth:

A. Do it yourself if: Your bookkeeping takes only a few hours a week. You know exactly what my financial situation is right now.

b. Hire help if: Your time is worth a lot more than you’d pay a bookkeeper to keep you organized, you just haven’t realized it yet&

If you are a do-it-yourself bookkeeper, you can keep your own books until it hinders the growth of your business. If you want to be more successful in your business, there will come a time when you need to complete more high-value activities. Then it will be time to hire a bookkeeper.

If you’re a business owner waiting for tax season again to get your books organized, you need to be realistic about where your strengths lie. Find a local Quickbooks Proadvisor or CPA to help you implement a system.

I know: “But, Rebecca, it’s too expensive to hire accounting help!” & My answer & it can be much more expensive NOT to hire help.

All day care centers, public or home based, have policies for determining if a child is too sick and/or contagious to be around other children. The list can be long, and if parents are unaware of the illnesses that can keep their child out of daycare, they could be in for a nasty surprise. These suggestions should help any parent prepare for a sick day.

When is your child too sick to go to day care?

The list of illnesses that can prohibit a child from daycare is long, but necessary to protect other children from getting sick too. The most common reasons a child is sent home is due to illness or parasites. This generally includes fever over 99.9, vomiting, rash, severe ‘whooping’ cough that produces thick green or yellow mucus, cold (especially with fever and runny nose), strep throat, conjunctivitis, chickenpox, scabies, and having lice. Check with the supplier their regulations.

When can your child return to daycare?

Usually, with a doctor’s note, your child can return to daycare when their symptoms have been absent for at least 24 hours or they have been on antibiotics for the same amount of time. This will ensure that no other children are exposed to the disease and that no other children have to stay home or take medicine. Again, be sure to check with the provider for their requirements.

What are the consequences of a child being sent home from daycare?

Not only will the parent have to leave work to pick up their child, but often the daycare will still charge for the days their child is absent, especially from in-home providers. Larger centers may charge a fee for cleaning and disinfecting your child’s assigned room. If there is no one else to care for your child, he will also lose wages for the days he must stay home with your child until he can return to daycare.

What can parents do to lessen the impact of a sick child?

First, keep in mind that all children will get sick. To keep illness to a minimum, wash and sanitize your hands often. Teach children to cough into their elbow and not their hands to reduce the chance of passing germs to others.

Second, create a backup plan. Arrange to have a friend or family member on your child’s approved list, and make sure they are willing to pick up and care for your child until you get home from work, also ask if they might be available for the duration of the disease. Find out if your employer will allow telecommuting while your child is sick.

Third, don’t be a hit-and-run parent. If your child is sick, activate the backup plan, or the provider will call you and you will have to pick up your child anyway. This is why the backup plan is so important, it leaves other options open besides giving your child cold medicine to mask his symptoms and hoping the provider doesn’t realize he’s sick.

A working parent faces many challenges every day, at work, at home, and at their child’s daycare. Planning for the unavoidable illness will reduce stress on the parent, provider, and child. As an adult, try to remember what it was like to be sick as a child. Would you have wanted to leave your warm bed to face a noisy and crowded place, or would you rather just be able to rest in peace and quiet until you felt better?

Anyone looking for a unique vacation destination should definitely visit West Africa. Abidjan is the largest city in the Ivory Coast or “Ivory Coast”, accounting for 45% of the country’s population. It is no longer the official capital, but it is still the business and travel center of West Africa. The West African American Embassy is located in Abidjan. The airport is located within the city. The language of the city is French. Travelers often refer to Abidjan as the “Paris of Africa” and liken the overall European atmosphere.

Areas:

There are ten different municipalities in Abidjan: Abobo, Port-Bouët, Adjamé, Attécoubé, Cocody, Biétry, Marcory, Koumassi, The Plateau, Treichville, Île Boulay and Yopougon. Therefore, take into account where your hotel is located, compared to the desired destinations. I recommend Treichville for vacationers and The Plateau for business travelers. Some of these are high-end districts, while others are very poor neighborhoods.

Transport:

The most common transportation is by taxi. Just be sure to ask the driver what the fare or cost will be, as some will take advantage of foreigners. “Gbakas” (a tiny van) are also an option, but limited in number. Other forms of public transport are available, but often limited to the destination.

Things to do:

The city will host many annual music, dance, parades, film and festival events: Concerto Festival, les Top d’or, Festival of Urban Dances, International Festival of Black Music, International Jazz Festival of Abidjan, Hip-hop is back festival, Faya Flow, Dj Mix Atalakou, Maracana d’Abidjan Festival, International Lingerie and Beauty Festival, FESNACI, MASA Festival, Le Tiercé Gagnant, Climbie beach Festival, RTI Music Awards, International Comic Festival, etc…

Monuments and museums include: National Library, National Museum, La Celebre Rue Princesse, Saint-Paul of Abidjan Cathedral, Village Kiyi – M’Bock, Chocolate City, Museum of Contemporary Art, American Cultural Center, Goethe Institute, Le Point d ‘Orgue , Municipal Museum, Mosque of the Plateau, Place la Sorbone, French Cultural Center, Museum of Civilizations of the Ivory Coast, Palais de la Culture, Palais des sports, Craft Center of the City of Abidjan, 1000 maquis.

Some popular events also include going to see sporting events, especially ASEC Mimosas and Africa Sports National.

Banco National Park is a 7,500-acre tropical rain forest. This is a mandatory tour! There is also a public zoo.

Hotels:

There is no shortage of hotels in Abidjan. The most popular are: Hotel Ivoire International, Ibis Abidjan Plateau, Hotel du Nord, Novotel Abidjan, Hotel Banfoura, Sofitel Abidjan, Hotel Tiama, African Queen Lodge and Golf Hotel Inter-Continental Abidjan.

You may see a lot of negative facts about the Ivory Hotel. Although the swimming pool, the skating rink, the casino, etc. often closed and dilapidated, the hotel underwent an extensive $60 million renovation in 1999. It really is a sight to see.

Food:

There are a variety of food options. The native restaurants will serve mainly yam, bread, rice, fish and cassava dishes. European-style cooking is also a popular choice. Many of the food vendors prepare food on the streets. On Princess Road, vendors sell spicy chicken fingers. But you can find western foods, like – “Big Burger”.

Civil unrest has dissipated. However, there is an occasional incident. Just be careful, like you would in any foreign city. Keep your passport with you at all times – it’s the law.

The city is a unique and culturally enriching experience.

Hopefully this helps with the overview of the city. It has a beautiful Ivory Coast of Abidjan, booming businesses, commercial districts, sports, festive activities, thriving ports, and much more.

Your cash flow statement based on your other statements. The three statements are related to each other.

The first section of your cash flow statement is cash flow from operations. Cash flow from operations shows the cash flowing in or out of your business based on your operations.

The first line of your cash flow from operations should be net income after taxes and interest, but before dividends. The second line should be the depreciation that is deducted from your income statement.

Following these two lines should be changes in your assets (other than property, plant, and equipment), followed by changes in your liabilities from period to period; Both items come from your balance sheet and can be broken down line by line as shown on your balance sheet.

The equation to obtain the cash flow from operations is:

cash flow from operations = net income + depreciation – change in assets + change in liabilities

Think about how your cash comes into your business: if the value of your assets increases, you will have less cash. For example, if your accounts receivable increase, you were expecting to receive cash from the income you generated, but you don’t have the cash yet.

On the liability side, if you could delay paying vendors for longer periods of time, then you would have more cash in your bank account.

The next section of the statement of cash flows is the cash flow from the investment. In general, this is money that you have invested in plant, property, and equipment. This section would also include investment in subsidiaries or other areas of capital. If I sold any of these, it would also be listed here.

The next section is the cash flow from the financing. Financing includes equity investments, loans and other debt, any share repurchases, and any dividends paid.

To get the cash flow for this particular period, you would take the cash flow from operations, subtract the cash flow from investing, and add the cash flow from financing. Some accountants put a negative number in the investing section cash flow and therefore add all three sections together to get the cash generated (or lost) for the current period.

Add the cash generated for the current period to the cash at the beginning of the period to get the cash at the end of the period. This number will be entered on the cash line of the statement.

I’ve included a set of example statements that will show you how all the statements are put together. Visit my blog, CFO Yourself, to download the sample Excel spreadsheet. Keep in mind that cash is decreasing even though income is increasing. This is because, in this example, the debt is paid off faster than the company generates revenue. Basically, at the beginning of the year, this company swaps debt for an equity investment.

You’ve seen the amazing statistics about Apple apps and how everyday people are finding success writing apps for the iPhone and iPad. Well, the first thing I can tell you is that you are right! Apple’s app store is taking the world by storm (exceeding more than 2 billion downloads). And my suspicion is that this is all just the beginning.

The problem is, how do you go about writing an application? In fact, what do you need before being an application developer? Well, that’s where this article will help you. I’ll provide you with 10 things you need before you start writing your Apple app. Even if you’ve never developed content for a mobile device, or you’re new to software development, you should know that learning how to develop iPhone can be a fun and rewarding experience.

1. Get a Mac OS X computer

To develop apps for iPhone OS, you need a Mac OS X computer running the Xcode tools. Xcode is Apple’s development toolset that provides support for project management, code editing, executable creation, and debugging.

I know many of you may be PC users and some of you may be resistant to the idea of using a Mac. Well, my advice is: give the Mac a try. I have many friends who were once diehard PC users who now they moved to Mac. Why? Because they want to write apps! And once they made the switch, they found the Mac much easier to use and a really nice experience.

2. Download the SDK

Apple distributes an application software development kit (SDK) for iPhone. You will definitely need to download this and read it from front to back. Don’t worry, it’s more complex than it seems. Give it time and you’ll soon be on the bandwagon of app development.

3. Learn Objective-C

Mac programs are written in Objective-C. Apple also introduced a special abstraction API for Objective-C called Cocoa Touch for iPhone (and iPod Touch) development.

Objective-C will come quite naturally to those who have programmed in C, C++, or Java before. Now, if you’re new to programming, Objective-C might be challenging.

Try to get a basic book on programming before getting into the practical aspects of Objective-C. One of the best books for learning Objective-C is Programming in Objective-C by Stephen G. Kochan. It is not assumed that you have any prior knowledge in this area.

4. Become an Approved Apple Developer

Becoming an approved developer for Apple apps takes some time. Many people do not know this. I heard there is a six month waiting list to be an approved developer. Some have speculated that the wait time may decrease now that interest in the iPhone and iPad has skyrocketed around the world.

Becoming an accepted developer only gets you to the App Store. Of course, that’s the only way to distribute your apps, so it’s a necessary part of the process.

5. Research your application

As with everything related to software development, the goal of your application will be to provide a solution to a set of end users.

Be sure to research your application. It doesn’t make sense to start writing applications that don’t meet the needs of users. A year ago, you could easily write an app that would do something silly (for example, make a fart sound) and expect people to download it. That’s not going to happen anymore. If you want an app that is popular, you have to make it useful.

Typically, in mobile development, your audience is a person on the go. People using mobile apps want to have quick interactions. They absolutely do not want to write a Word document on the go. They want to do useful things with the push of a button or two.

The other piece of advice I have is to think of the Apple iPhone as a pocket computer. For example, successful applications like Pandora, which have typically struggled in a desktop setup, now flourish as a pocket computer solution. When planning your app, think about what’s unique to iPhone that can be used in your app.

6. Write for portability

What do I mean by portability? Well, depending on which frameworks (core iPhone SDK components) are used in your app, your app may not work on all iPhone devices. For example, an app that uses the camera, compass, or microphone will work on an iPhone but not on an iPod touch.

Now, it’s fine to write an app that is limited to iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS, but I think you’ll miss out on a potential portion of your target users.

7. Always document your ideas

Before you commit any code to your new project, take some time to document your end-user experience. It does not need to be a lengthy requirements document. It could be as simple as writing some notes on paper or drawing some pictures.

In fact, there is a great drawing product called User Interface Templates that allows you to simulate a screen layout on paper. I love it and highly recommend it for application development.

8. Offer a great user experience

When you start looking at Apple’s documentation, a recurring theme you’ll see is a reference to a document called the Human Interface Guidelines (HIG). Essentially, this is the master document for how your iPhone app should look and behave. Be sure to familiarize yourself with it.

It is also important to download and try other apps created by other leading developers. To ensure a great user experience in your app, ask yourself why those apps are the leaders and what elements they used to create a great experience. Also check out insights from usability expert Jakob Nielsen.

9. Data management

Oh, before I forget, one of the more complex things you’ll need to consider is data management. If your application is a basic utility (for example, a calculator), you shouldn’t worry about storing data. If you create an application that connects to an Internet-based service, it will connect to these online resources through web services. Your third option will be to store user data on the device using the Core Data Framework.

10. Manage memory and battery life

Those who are a bit more technical will understand what I mean by memory management and battery life. Please note that there is no garbage collection for iPhone. Garbage collection is a programming term that means that if your program has a “memory leak”, it could cause the iPhone to crash without warning.

Also, keep in mind that certain iPhone features will consume more battery than others. For example, applications that transmit data from the Internet or make extensive use of the Core Location Framework (for example, GPS) will drain battery life faster.

Conclusion

I certainly hope this article has given you an idea of what you need to do before writing an Apple app.

There are quite a few things you need: a Mac OS X computer, knowledge of Objective-C, user interface design experience, and more. But if you’re serious about your app development process, don’t be discouraged.

Learn a little each day and I guarantee you’ll become an expert developer in no time!

Next time, I will write some articles on how to program an application in Xcode and Objective-C tools. Until then, have fun learning how to develop those apps!

During the Bears-Falcons game on Sunday afternoon, Matt Ryan showed Atlanta fans why he was a great pick for the franchise in the 2008 NFL Draft. Kicker Jason Elam also showed how valuable his acquisition was during the low season.

Ryan was 22 of 30 for 301 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions in the Falcons’ thrilling 22-20 win over the Chicago Bears. The biggest story, though, was kicker Jason Elam, who went 5-for-6 from the field, including a 48-yarder as time expired, giving Atlanta its fourth win in six games this season.

Both teams had to rely on their kickers, as each side stayed out of the end zone for the entire first half. Elam kicked a total of three field goals for Atlanta, while the Falcons defense held Chicago to just three points in the first half (a Robbie Gould 36-yard field goal with 4:02 remaining in the second quarter). ).

The score was 9-3, in favor of the Falcons, heading into halftime.

The Bears scored the first touchdown of the game with 2:24 remaining in the 3rd quarter on Matt Forte’s 3-yard run, making it 12-10 in favor of Atlanta. The Falcons’ ensuing drive, which lasted into the 4th quarter, resulted in a 3-yard touchdown pass to Roddy White from Matt Ryan, making it 19–10.

Neither team made much progress on any drive after that touchdown until the Bears were able to convert on a 32-yard field goal attempt, again by Robbie Gould, with 4:00 remaining in the quarter.

The Bears retained possession after Atlanta’s drive late in the 4th quarter faltered when Jason Elam, who seemed to be the goat, hooked a 33-yard field goal attempt wide left with less than 3:00 remaining. in the game. Bears quarterback Kyle Orton completed a total of seven passes on Chicago’s ensuing drive, including a 17-yard touchdown throw to wide receiver Rashied Davis with 0:11 seconds remaining in the game to tie the score. 19-19. Gould’s Bears PAT attempt was good and gave Chicago the 20-19 lead.

After the score, Gould passed Chicago’s kickoff to the Falcons’ Harry Douglas, who managed to return the kick 10 yards to put Atlanta at their own 44-yard line. The clock showed 0:07 seconds left in the game and the Fans seemed to lose hope as many of them poured out of the packed Georgia Dome. Then, with the poise of a 10-year veteran, Matt Ryan calmly threw a pass to receiver Michael Jenkins for a 26-yard gain along the left sideline. Jenkins caught the pass in front of safety Mike Brown, dropped both feet and fell out of bounds with just 0:01 seconds left on the clock. Matt Ryan once again showed the Falcons faithful why the organization selected him with the third overall pick in the draft and also why the team has labeled him “the new face of the franchise.”

The play set up a 48-yard field goal attempt by kicker Jason Elam. The try spelled redemption for the longtime Denver Broncos leg, who the Falcons picked up in a free agent deal during the offseason. His missed field goal early in the fourth quarter was his first of 31 attempts, and nearly sealed his fate as the game’s scapegoat. After a short delay to confirm Jenkins’ reception was good, Elam lined up for the kick. The snap was good, and Elam, with a flick of his right leg, launched the kick into the air as the clock read 0:00. The ball slipped between the uprights and the referees raised their arms, indicating that the shot had been a good one. Elam had redeemed himself when the Falcons stunned the Bears with their shocking and thrilling fourth win of the season.

The Falcons broke out in a playoff-like celebration near midfield after the kickoff. Head coach Mike Smith lifted his rookie quarterback into the air as Elam was surrounded by his teammates, having made amends with his fifth field goal of the game, tying his career high.

The Falcons can get a lot out of their 22-20 win over the Bears. The defense showed he’s a resilient force to contend with, Elam showed just how reliable his leg still is and Matt Ryan showed he’s a rising star after another successful week. Ryan is a player who will soon be one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, as soon as he reaches his prime.

Six games into what was supposed to be a rebuilding year, the Falcons have already matched their win total from a forgettable 2007 season.

Suddenly, the playoffs don’t seem to be out of the question.

Go Falcons!
