Having gained considerable experience developing five of my own accounting practices and spending the next two decades individually helping more than 2,000 accountants develop their own practices, there are some basic principles that accountants can observe to give themselves the greatest chance of success.

The best way for accountants to be successful in starting their own CPA Accounting and Tax practice is by providing themselves the greatest opportunity for that success. This can be done by remembering that the basic principles for a successful practice are good clients along with the basic tools to serve them. Many accountants looking to develop their own practice are positioned with large amounts of unnecessary overhead that undermine their chance of success. Unnecessary costs can be deferred until they are needed. Get only the items you need to serve initial customers. It is important to keep upfront overhead as low as possible to quickly create positive cash flow to fund practice development.

When starting a CPA accounting and tax firm, it is recommended that accountants start from home. In today’s tech world, accountants who work from home are very accepting of clients. In a sense, it provides customers with the perception that they are receiving greater value. They feel that if the accountant is incurring less overhead, perhaps some of the savings will be passed on to clients. By saving on the cost of rent and other office expenses, accountants will accelerate their positive cash flow, which can be used to finance the expansion of the practice without going into debt. Once the cash flow is sufficient to maintain an office, the accountant can decide whether expansion to an office is warranted. Accountants who work from home may also find they enjoy it so much that they may choose to forego moving to an outside office.

Another way that accountants can keep overhead low is by avoiding unnecessary expensive software. Many accountants purchase expensive unnecessary software to help clients they have not yet developed. There are extremely good software companies that offer a great product at a low or medium price. Drake Tax Software is a very profitable software program that has an excellent reputation. In the September 2011 issue of The Journal of Accountancy, the results of a software survey were published and Drake Tax Software received an excellent score. Accountants who are starting their own CPA accounting and tax firm are encouraged to look for good software at affordable prices that provides them with the basic tools to serve clients.

There are many other simple ways that accountants starting their own tax and accounting firm can cut start-up costs. Simply the name that the accountants decide on for their companies will lower their startup costs. If accountants use their first name, middle initial, and last name followed by CPA and / or Certified Public Accountant, they can avoid DBA registration costs, bank charges, and filing fees. Additionally, actively licensed Certified Public Accountants have legal rights to practice public accounting under their own names, saving them costs associated with fictitious names. Many times, Certified Public Accountants may choose fictitious names, which would lower potential clients’ perception of them, which in turn would prevent starting a business. For example, a licensed CPA who operates as a “Bay City Tax Service” or “Accounting and Tax Service” loses credibility. Potential customers may perceive that this company is not certified and unlicensed.

Accountants who are considering developing a Certified Public Accountant / Accounting practice and are currently employed are encouraged not to terminate their employment in order to start their own Chartered Accountant and Chartered Accountant firm. Instead, they must develop their practice at the same time while still employed. This may be a time consuming decision compared to terminating your employment and dedicating full time to your practice; however, the sacrifice is well worth the reward. As the practice grows, accountants can grow with it and transition themselves full-time to their own practice without putting unnecessary financial pressure on themselves or their families.

With the financial pressure relieved while operating the new practice at the same time as employment, there will be a substantial increase in income without incurring large expenses. Cash reserves will increase substantially as earned income is maintained, and new income will also begin to flow from the new practice. This increase in cash reserves will go a long way in financing a full-time transition, and this will make the move more seamless when the time comes.

By making that change to a full-time practice, accountants will find it easier to transition from full-time to their own practice in January. January is the beginning of tax season and, along with it, the beginning of income from income tax preparation. The increased revenue will come just when accountants need it most. It is important for accountants to position themselves to start marketing early in the tax season to aggressively develop individual tax clients who make the most of their first tax season. Also, January covers year-end work for many companies, such as payroll and financial reporting. This will also add additional income to the accountants’ practices in the month of your transition.

January is also the best month of the year to transition from full time to internship because it can be the best month of the year to develop new business as clients. Most business owners are reluctant to change accountants. It takes a very strong reason for a client to leave a predecessor accountant. Once a customer makes the decision to change, they generally won’t invoke the change until the end of the business year if they don’t want two accountants to split a fiscal year. Consequently, the end of the year is the most opportune time to reach out to business owners and will ease the transition to full-time practice.

Lastly, when starting a public accountancy and tax business, it is important to avoid marketing services as a commodity or a product. This often leads to a very low response and low quality clientele. It can also be extremely expensive. There are a large number of accountants who are pursuing very expensive marketing programs offered by various companies and who are lured by hard-to-enforce warranties. Many of these programs are commodity-based. The accounting industry is not based on commodities; it is driven by trust and loyalty. An accountant’s marketing campaign should be driven by truth, honesty, and professionalism, allowing the client to feel more comfortable knowing that they are hiring an accountant they can trust.

Currently employed accountants or CPAs looking to start their own accounting and tax CPA firms will find it beneficial to follow the practice by following a few very simple steps:

1) Avoid unnecessary costs and expenses.

2) Consider starting your CPA accounting practice from home.

3) Develop the practice alongside current employment.

4) Avoid marketing the business as a commodity or a product.

Remember, opportunity begins with action. No action, no opportunity. Accountants who take action give themselves a chance to succeed. They should start their own bookkeeping and accounting businesses from home while employed. Their successful experience without jeopardizing their future will give them the confidence and cash flow they need to enjoy the freedoms of owning a CPA accounting and tax firm.

This is an article on the Nikon D3400 PLAYBACK MENU and RECENT SETTINGS MENU. The reason I put those two together is that they are both relatively short and therefore easy to put them in one article. The playback menu controls how the camera stores and watches the photos or videos it has taken. So if we go into the PLAYBACK MENU of the Nikon D3400, the first option is to delete. Now of course you have the delete button at the bottom of the camera in the bottom right at the back, so it’s just a different way to access that option. The one below is the playback folder. This allows you to assign the folder that is on the SD memory card that the camera shows you when you press the play button. When you put in the SD card and format it, a folder will be created for all images and videos to go to that folder. Once you have created 999 files, be it images or videos or edited images going back to that folder, a new folder is automatically created and thus this is the point where you decide which folder you want to select when you hit play. . This is worth knowing because at some point a little later your card possibly creates another folder and then you find that you cannot access the images that you thought you could. The options here are to view all images, and they will be in chronological or numerical order, or you can assign certain folders so that you can view them from specific folders. I usually leave it on because it’s easier, but sometimes it can be easier to view from a specific folder, if you want to see a specific session or specific vacation photos then that’s one way to go.

The next option on the Nikon D3400 PLAYBACK MENU is the PLAYBACK SCREEN OPTIONS. These are really useful and allow you to see the data surrounding that image on the Liveview screen. It will show you histograms, both tonal and RGB histograms, and other shooting data. It’s very, very useful, especially since in the days of the movies you would have had a notebook and written all this down. I would have shot and written down the shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and various other items that were important to that image so that you could remember how you did it so you could do it again. Here the data is attached to the image and you can access that data by choosing the PLAYBACK SCREEN OPTIONS and here I would recommend that you mark the RGB histogram so that the shooting data is marked and the overview is marked. The highlights are less important, that only shows you the areas where there is essentially no data; in other words, it is bright white. That can be helpful, but not as useful as the other three.

The IMAGE REVIEW OPTION in the Nikon D3400’s PLAYBACK MENU refers to the option of having the image appear on the rear screen once it is taken. I tend to shoot single frames, so having that review on the back can be quite useful, which is why I tend to leave it on. However, if you are going to photograph sports or something that is happening very fast in front of you, then there is no real need and you should be aware that battery power is needed.

The AUTO IMAGE ROTATION and ROTATE HIGH that I leave on and the reason I do it is because they refer to when taking a portrait photo like this. When you check it again, either on the back screen here or on a computer, it will rotate the image so that it is in the correct shape when you are looking at a horizontal screen. It’s useful, it’s only worth turning it on and off because there’s no reason to change that once you’ve done it once.

SLIDE SHOW in the Nikon D3400 PLAYBACK MENU gives you the option of viewing the images on the rear screen as a slide show. I think this is probably one of those things that you will never use, but it is an option. You can go in and you can select the images you want to see and also the interval between frame changes. It is useful? I do not think. I guess you could run it if you connect an HDMI cable to this and have it on a TV screen. It’s a way to review your photos or show them to other people more easily, but I don’t see much point in it beyond that.

RATE AGAIN is an option that allows you to enter the camera and rate your images. It has a star above it so you can know which images you selected at the time that you think are the best images. Again, to be honest, I would recommend looking at your images on a larger screen. It is not something that I would use, but it is an option that is there for you. Finally the option to select images to send to your smart device. You can send each photo you take to your smart device, or you can choose to select the image that you send to your smart device.

So those are the options in the playback menu and if we quickly scroll down to the bottom now and take a look at the RECENT SETTINGS MENU. Now this in a sense is not a menu in and of itself, it is not something the camera has provided for you. There are no options here unless you put them there or select them from other menus. These are the recent settings, the things you have looked at and changed recently. I think it has a limited value, but it can be useful if you change your camera settings so that you want to shoot something specific, you may want to shoot something, for example with a specific white balance, or you may want to choose a particular image . style something like that, that means it has changed things on the menus. Then you can go back to recent settings at the end of that session and you have a list of the things that you have changed that you can then change back. I’d say it’s probably the most useful thing it can be. The reason I don’t think it’s terribly useful is that it only has eight of the 20 options on the screen, so when you’re in recent settings you find yourself scrolling down the page in exactly the same way that you would if you were in any of the other menus looking for the setting in its original place. So it’s limited in value, but it’s there, it can be useful, sometimes it’s worth checking out if you’re not quite sure what you may have inadvertently changed or seen and changed. So these are the settings in the Nikon D3400 PLAYBACK MENU.

In light of the recent increase in lifestyle-related diseases, many of us have begun to understand the role of a healthy diet. It has been proven time and again through various research articles that a healthy diet is of paramount importance in restoring your health to normal while dealing with chronic illness. Here I speak specifically of one of those diets, the autoimmune paleo diet (AIP). There may be several reasons why this particular diet was prescribed for you, or maybe you even chose it without any recommendation. Either way, if you feel like transitioning to this diet after years and years of unhealthy dieting is challenging, some basic tips can certainly be helpful.

Keep the list handy

Whether you are working with a healthcare professional or relying on internet search, you will definitely find the list of foods to avoid on an AIP diet. Take a hard copy of that elaborate list (the more elaborate the better) and post it somewhere in your kitchen, brilliantly visible. This way, when you’re just starting out on your diet, you can quickly check the list before preparing a meal or going shopping.

Set a routine

Although food choices are quite limited on an AIP diet, it can be overwhelming to cook with so little food. For example, you may have had a dish made with butter forever, and you can’t even imagine what you would do if you had to make it with coconut oil, and you might think about giving up. To avoid this, it is important from the beginning to prepare recipes and dishes for all meals of the day. It may seem repetitive at first, but it would help you get into the diet before you think about experimenting more with the handful of ingredients.

Create your own recipes

It is not difficult to find a wealth of information on AIP-based dishes, whether online or offline. Now that this type of diet is gaining popularity, the food world is getting richer in its collection of AIP recipes. However, it is important to listen to your amenities, primarily your local grocery store. For example, don’t just jump into banana paste if you’ve liked pasta in the past and found a recipe in an AIP book. Think about the ingredients – are they available locally? Think about convenience – will you be able to put in the time and effort behind the plate? And finally, think about your own taste buds – just because someone else likes a banana paste doesn’t mean you like it too. It’s a good idea to understand what ingredients you have on hand, how they taste like you, and how you can modify your existing recipes to fit the new recipes without compromising too much time, effort, and flavor.

Jump in the wagon, don’t jump

Unless you have a specific condition where you have been advised to immediately abandon all non-AIP items, it may be wise to start with one plate at a time, and then one meal at a time, to the entire meal. day, for a smoother transition to AIP-friendly palate.

What makes a video successful online? Believe it or not, it’s not the fancy camera or the fancy music and titles you use. Here are some tips on how to make a good YouTube video.

There are millions of videos on YouTube. The first trick is to get your video found by using a lot of great keywords in your tags. If you use a lot of related keywords in your tags, you have a much higher chance of being found. The other option is to make a fantastic video that people will see, love, and pass on to all of their friends. Many videos on YouTube don’t have good keyword tags, but they have a lot of views simply because they are so good.

Try including one or even all of these features in your YouTube video. If you make sure your video is funny, gross, weird, shocking, sexy, interesting, inspiring, or useful, you are on the right track.

Here’s why the video you post should be one or all of the above.

Your video should be funny because people love to laugh. People are always looking for fun things to see. People also like to share funny things with their friends, so if your video is funny, it will have a better chance of being shared with others.

People love weird things, so a weird element in your video will get you a lot of views. The weirder, the more interesting the video is and the more people will broadcast it.

A raw video will give you a lot of views. Just look at how many people see the fear factor.

Inspirational stories are also very popular on YouTube. If you can inspire, you should take advantage of that ability.

Shocking videos are usually hits. The word will travel fast and people will not be able to resist seeing it.

Sexy, as everyone knows, has never been an obstacle to selling a product.

Make your video interesting and generate curiosity. If you do this, people will be tempted to click through to your website to see what else you have there. A video demonstrating how to do something is often very popular. People are always looking for free and useful information and advice on the Internet. How-to videos are probably the easiest types of videos to make, as you simply need to demonstrate a product or something that you know a lot about.

Give your viewers a part of you by making your personal video clip. People are naturally curious and love to know everything about other people. Be natural and be yourself.

Are you one of the millions of people who love bagels for breakfast or bread for dinner? Let’s face it, bread is one of the staples in the food chain that has kept consumers hungry for centuries.

So why is there so much talk about the adverse effects of gluten consumption? Bread is supposed to be good for you, right? This may be true for most people, but not for others who experience symptoms such as bloating and diarrhea. Some of my patients even complain of fatigue, weight loss, and perhaps muscle and joint pain. When I dig deeper into your eating habits to determine the cause of your problem, nine times out of ten I find that your symptoms are related to gluten sensitivity.

What is gluten sensitivity and how do you know if you have it? If you are asking yourself this question, you are not alone. Let me explain.

“Gluten” is a family of proteins found in wheat along with oats, rye, and barley. Gluten sensitivity is caused by an immune reaction to gluten. A simple blood test can determine if you have specific antibodies against gluten. An inherited form of gluten sensitivity is called celiac disease and it can affect 1 in 133 people. Celiac disease is often diagnosed by a small bowel biopsy that can reveal physical damage. Other forms of gluten allergy or sensitivity can develop as people age.

What happens if you keep eating gluten?

Some of the symptoms of gluten sensitivity are felt in the digestive tract. Others are more generalized. The body releases chemicals during many immune responses that can cause the vague symptoms of joint pain, fatigue, and muscle pain.

If the gluten-sensitive person continues to eat gluten-containing foods, the body will continue to produce antibodies against gluten. This immune reaction causes physical damage to the lining of the small intestine and makes it difficult for the body to absorb nutrients. This causes diarrhea and weight loss. Left unchecked, the damage can become life-threatening. Fortunately, the small intestine has the ability to regenerate healthy cells and will recover over time if gluten is removed from the diet.

What if you are sensitive to gluten?

Here are some things you can do if you suspect that you may have some of the symptoms described above:

• Consult with your doctor and request a blood test to determine if you are sensitive to gluten.

• Look for foods made with oats, quinoa, rice, corn, millet, and amaranth.

• Prepared foods, such as frozen mac and cheese, will include the gluten content on the package.

• The website for local gluten-free recipes, products, and support groups are available online.

• Ask your market to offer tours that highlight gluten-free items on the shelves.

• Ask your local market to expand gluten-free options.

• Restaurants and cruises often have gluten-free options for pizzas, pastas, and breads.

• With gluten sensitivity becoming more prevalent, it is possible that if you ask for gluten-free food when dining out, other members of your group will ask for it too.

• If temptation is a problem, have the cracker and bread baskets removed after the other guests have served themselves.

Keep your digestive tract healthy!

Once you eliminate gluten and your digestive tract is healing, there are ways to keep it working well. Eat a variety of healthy fruits and vegetables. In the evening, drink a glass of water with a tablespoon of psyllium husk mixed in. This adds fiber and helps remove unwanted material from the body. Yogurt can help restore the balance of your gut bacteria, which is important for digesting food.

The damage caused by gluten sensitivity can interfere with the body’s ability to process food. Your digestive system may need help to regain health. Here are some natural ways to help with healing.

• Take a multivitamin, because a damaged gut absorbs fewer nutrients from food.

• L-glutamine is helpful in healing the lining of the small intestine

• A probiotic supplement can help restore good bacteria in the gut.

• Digestive enzymes can help your system digest food while restoring the natural enzyme balance.

• Fiber, like psyllium and flax, can help the intestines work efficiently.

If you’ve had a gluten sensitivity for months or years, be patient. Give your body time to heal once you eliminate gluten from your diet. Avoid the bakery counter and eat healthy gluten-free foods instead. A gluten-free meal plan can lead you to a delicious diet that is better for your overall health!

The Sims is an excellent game. Most games are about action where the competition is intense, there is a lot of adrenaline and they involve the death or destruction of the opponent. Here is a simulation game in which you control the life and actions of a virtual person, the “Sim”. In a virtual world where there are daily activities like in the real world, for example, eating, sleeping, meeting people and dating. You create your own character and live a virtual lifestyle similar to the normal lifestyle that people live every day. However, keep in mind that there are certain characters that come with the game, like Newbie and Goth, that you can also use. You are the creator or master of this virtual world where you portray a realistic lifestyle. Your thoughts are allowed to come to life.

This is how the Sims game is played. First create your male and female characters and give them a bit of virtual life by giving them personality or style. This is where you develop your Sim’s pattern of behavior or mood. The astrological sign and therefore the behavior is associated with each sim. If a Sim is outgoing and vibrant, living with another with similar traits is more likely to make life easier for both of you. The same goes for the opposite scenario. Therefore, you want to place everyone else as roommates who have similar personalities. Then you must determine the physical appearance of the sims. Are they tall sims, short sims, black, brown, white, blonde, fat, skinny sims, etc.? You decide the look you want. Now you must take on the role of fashion stylist and put some clothes on your sims. Just like in the real world, you can keep your Sims’ clothes according to their personality. The whole logic behind the game is to create a family of up to 8 members. Give them personality by creating a bio.

What is the life of the sims without virtual money and certain needs or assets to survive. The next step is to provide money to the simulation characters to start. Buy them the necessities of life for existence in the virtual world of the sims, such as a home and furniture. Even in this fictional world resources are limited and you will have to find a job for the sims on a day-to-day basis. To do this, look in the newspaper or on the Internet. The player must use the shortage of time in a way that flows with an ordinary lifestyle. For example, a decision must be made about the time spent eating, reading, watching television, exercising, having fun, etc. Personal development is also important when playing the Sims game, therefore you should spend time eating, bathing, brushing your teeth, sleeping, unless you want to die from lack of maintenance. When you play the Sims game, the necessities of life increase the desire for income in order to achieve a healthy lifestyle. This also includes financial health. Sims also need recreation or else depression will set in and those who will want to be depressed. If Sims’ needs are not met, however artificial, then they act out of character and confusion and the result would be a messy world. The end result is the death of your sims.

By playing the Sims game, you would find a partner, build a relationship by dating, get married, and start a family. Of course, a sim will want to date another with whom they are compatible. That would ensure a smooth relationship. Falling in love will require the acceptance of one sim personality to another, as all personalities are somewhat different. Sims can get married and move into a house together. The husband would take care of the male chores in the garden or around the house, while the wife would take care of the wife’s things. You play the Sims game by creating an environment for the family that encourages healthy living conditions. You have all the options within the game that give you the information about your characters and you must use this information to satisfy the needs of the sims. Build a new home, build a new room, upgrade your furniture and make a better life for the sims. Play the Sims game and you will see the games from a whole new perspective.

The reception and demand for the Sims game is phenomenal. There is no end in sight to the growth potential of this game. The first release was in 2000 and since then this game is now the most popular PC game of all time. There are sequels like Sims Online, The Sims 2, MySims, The Sims Stories and the last one, Sims 3. Play the Sims game and create your virtual world.

Looking to reduce that belly fat? Do you want to get rid of those love handles? Are you looking for exercises to lose weight? If your goal is to decrease your waist size and reveal your abdominal muscles, P90X is for you! In just 30 days, at the end of the first phase of the program, you will see your waistline begin to shrink. I have been there and can attest to the fact that this program works. I have tried everything to get rid of belly fat for the last 10 years. Abs, diets, various gadgets, I’ve had them all and none worked. P90X was the first time I saw a real improvement.

One thing I didn’t understand prior to my success with P90X is the importance of exercising the whole body. There is no punctual training. You need a full body workout, including exercises that will work your entire core area. Abs alone won’t do the job. The core muscle group is often called the “trunk” and involves all the muscles that surround the trunk area. P90X is a total body workout and all the routines work your “core” in some way. However, the program includes two videos that specifically focus on the basic exercises.

Ab Ripper X is a 15-minute video that is made 3 days a week in the classic version of the program and 2 days a week in the adjusted version. Ab Ripper X is not done every day because, as Tony Horton advises, “you don’t work your abs every day.” It is usually done after strength training routines, however the 15 minutes is not easy and I found it best to separate the two. This way I was able to give it my all for both routines. I do Ab Ripper X in the morning and complete the strength training videos at night. The workout includes 11 movements and most require 25 repetitions. There is only a rest period of about 5 seconds between each exercise, so it passes quite quickly. Don’t be discouraged if you have problems at first. I started doing only 5 reps of each exercise and slowly increased until I completed most of the reps. I still can’t complete 25 reps of all the exercises!

The other basic training is Core Synergistic. This is done only during the recovery week in the classic version and once a week in the adjusted version. In fact, I modified my program where I did the classic version, but I replaced Kenpo X with Core Synergistic. This was because belly fat, love handles, and back fat were key problem areas for me, but I wanted to benefit from the strength training and intensity of the classic version. Core Synergistic includes a variety of exercises that work your core from all angles. From push-ups done with your feet stacked on top of each other and hands staggered, to superman-banana in which you switch from a superman pose to a banana every 10 seconds, to the steam engine that essentially involves performing sit-ups from a standing position. foot. You will never get bored with this video.

The best thing about these two routines is that they produce results while keeping you entertained. You’ll never have the abs you’ve been dreaming of if you start an exercise regimen and then quit due to boredom. This is not a problem with the P90X. This program keeps your muscles confused by working them in different ways while keeping you engaged at the same time. Also, the fact that workouts produce results quickly is a huge plus. Watching my core get stronger and more toned at the end of each phase, including that lower belly fat issue, helped keep me motivated. Nothing trimmed my tummy like this show. My goal before I started was to be in a bikini by the time I finished and reached my goal. It was definitely worth the effort!

For many beginning writers, and also for some veterans, the punctuation can be confusing. The scoring rules sometimes seem arcane, abstract, and even random. But if we see punctuation as a form of traffic control: commands to stop, pause, look ahead, etc. – it is easy to master these necessary grammar rules. In a previous excerpt, we explained how to use periods, commas, colons, and semicolons.

Hyphenated Words to Combine Ideas. People often coin new words by combining several. Stuck in with hyphens, these expressions are often converted into individual words. The word for America’s national pastime began as base ball, evolved into base ball, and eventually took the modern form of baseball. The last example: email turned into email and then email.

Scripts offer a great way to show how things are related to each other. Consider the following sentence: “East Coast liberals like Hillary Clinton differ from West Coast liberals like Jerry Brown.” We could say, “West Coast liberals,” but that’s not quite so concise.

Of course, connecting too many things with hyphenation can be silly. Thus: “The African-American senator for the first time from the South Side of Chicago made his first candidacy for the White House in 2008.”

Use em-hyphens – like this one – to make aside. If you want to establish complete phrases or lists, look for a long dash known as em-dash. Look at this sentence:

The Chicago Cubs’ inability to win a World Series for 100 years, a period that saw nineteen different presidents, has caused anguish among fans.

The em-dash helps the author to make an aside. The electronic script tells the reader to pause, as if to say, “Hey, check this out.”

Critics say em-dash makes writing cheaper by encouraging a loose, casual style. Without a doubt, the excessive use of any tool can be annoying. When we use em-dash too much, like here, it distracts and annoys the reader. But in moderation, again, not like this, the em-dash offers a useful and even fun way to emphasize a point.

Use ellipsis to show vanishing thought … Every time I see an ellipsis, a set of three points, I hear the sound of the harp music. Ellipses (plural of ellipsis) suggest that thinking turns off, reflects, open ideas. Ellipses allow us to deviate for a moment …

Case in point: “Dorothy considered her challenge: ‘If only I could see the Wizard of Oz …”‘ We see the girl with braided hair, a wicker basket, and a dog named Toto staring into space, on her own world, lost in thought.

The ellipses also perform a more technical task: marking gaps in the quoted passages. Quotes often omit entire sections. People rarely speak in compact packages, so writers have to stitch together comments made at different times. To indicate a space, use an ellipsis. Therefore, we can quote John F. Kennedy’s inaugural address this way:

Do not ask what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country … Let’s go out and lead the land we love, asking for His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God’s work must truly be our.

The ellipsis here indicates that the writer cut words from the original source. Connecting one part of the quote to another makes a point quickly.

Psst: use parentheses to make aside. Sometimes you want to offer a little related information. That information could strengthen the argument (by providing details or context) or simply provide an aside. (Ben Yagoda loves parentheses.)

Parentheses provide an efficient way to add basic information. When you want to provide examples of various things, use parentheses instead of saying “for example” over and over again. When Barack Obama began shaping his administration in 2008, he drew on America’s elite universities. New York Times columnist David Brooks described the emerging team:

January 20, 2009 will be a historic day. Barack Obama (Columbia, Harvard Law) will take the oath of office as his wife, Michelle (Princeton, Harvard Law) looks on with pride. Nearby, your foreign policy advisers will be beaming, including perhaps Hillary Clinton (Wellesley, Yale Law), Jim Steinberg (Harvard, Yale Law) and Susan Rice (Stanford, Oxford). Phil.).

Here an elite, there an elite, everywhere an elite. Brooks uses parentheses to clarify this point.

The wasteful use of parentheses makes the writing choppy. It is disorienting when you are diverted from the main train of thought, over and over again. On the other hand, sometimes you want to show how hectic the world can be. “So, are my parentheses part of my style?” Yagoda asks (rhetorically). “Actually, yes. I am drawn to them in part because they express my belief that the world and language are multiple, intricate, and illuminated by digression.”

Use quotation marks to say exactly what someone said. To indicate that you are using someone’s exact words, use quotation marks. Then:

“Don’t ask what your country can do for you,” said President Kennedy. “Ask what you can do for your country.”

Use the exact words of the speaker. If you want to paraphrase, quote only the words that were said and use your own words to connect the sentences. Then:

After challenging the nation to “ask what you can do for your country,” President Kennedy challenged other nations to “ask not what the United States will do for you, but what we can do together for the freedom of man.”

Punctuation is generally enclosed in quotes. So: “Don’t ask what your country can do for you,” Kennedy said.

Put punctuation marks outside the quotation marks to avoid confusion about what is quoted. When television journalist Tim Russert died, a website ran this headline: Tom Brokaw as host of “Meet the Press?” The headline suggests that Brokaw was in fact the host and that the show’s name contains a question. The headline should have asked: “Tom Brokaw as host of” Meet the Press “?

Sometimes it is necessary to quote someone by quoting someone else. To do that, use single quotes, inside double quotes, like this:

“I went back to the doctor and he said, ‘Henry, I told you, you can’t do it, you’re going to die in that mine.’ I said, ‘Well, Dr. Craft, let me try one more time,’ because I had some debts that I wanted to pay off. “

And what about a date within a date within a date? Go back to the double quotes (“), like this:

“I met Joyce at the rally and she yelled at me, ‘Let’s sing something. How about, ‘I’m not going to let anyone turn me around’? Let’s do it. ‘

Use exclamation marks (rarely!) To show enthusiasm or to be emphatic. I once worked with someone who used exclamation marks, a lot of them, all the time! Whether talking about something mundane or exciting, he ended each sentence with a multitude of these happy punctuation marks! I guess it’s not much different from someone who agrees with you all the time, or says “have a nice day” no matter what’s going on. But it’s too much!

Sober word writers avoid exclamation points except to show someone yelling. They point out, for example, that the constitutional guarantee of freedom of expression does not include shouting “Fire!” in a crowded theater. Novelist Elmore Leonard suggests using no more than two or three exclamation points per 100,000 words (the length of a book). And I agree. Mainly! To show real emotion, tell a great story instead of relying on a lighthearted punctuation.

And yet I admire Tom Wolfe so much that I admit the value of each and every one of his exclamations. By one count, Wolfe’s novel Bonfire of the Vanities contains 2,343 exclamation marks on 659 pages. “I’m trying to get the score back where it belongs,” Wolfe once explained. “The periods, hyphens, exclamation marks were removed from the prose because they ‘reeked of sentiment.’ But a! Show someone who gets carried away. Why not? The writer carefully not using this punctuation does not bother to convey what is exciting to the reader. “

Wolfe uses the exclamation point wisely, conveying excessive jealousy or innocence or naivety or rudeness. It works for him. For most of us, however, it is like a sharp object that is best left in the drawer!
