A. A. Safe path. Yes, the track has its moments and I love racing fast, but I’d rather be running on a trail any day.

A. It’s like when someone asks me if I have a favorite race: they are all so different and spectacular in their own right that I really can’t have favorites. Each one has a unique look that makes it special. Apart from that, one of my favorite areas to run is the Alps. Q. Nutrition? Meat or not? Are you a calorie tracker or just burning them?

R. Meat, absolutely. I give huge props to any vegetarian athlete who can perform well. There may be a diet that is perfect for athletes, raw, vegetarian, vegan, paleo, high carb, high protein, but I enjoy food too much to restrict myself to a particular diet. I could not do it. And I don’t track calories. I try to eat a healthy and balanced diet. My weight doesn’t fluctuate and I don’t have time to keep track of calories.

Q. Aside from racing, how do you prepare mentally and physically for racing? Yoga? Strength conditioning? Cycling? Swimming?

A. Physically, I try to do some light strength training and/or yoga a couple of times a week. During the winters I started doing some ski touring which really helped with my climbing ability. Mentally nothing special other than finding a training regimen that is sustainable. I think that’s the biggest thing for a lot of athletes’ careers, they don’t figure out how to make it sustainable in the long run and they end up burning out. So I do what I have to do. It motivates me and I love running in the mountains, but I also like a good track workout. If I feel like I’m burning out, I take a break or decrease my workload.

Q. Do you use fitness technology, devices or apps to train and compete?

A. I don’t trust them very much, but I think one of the most important things for athletes who are really trying to get faster or fitter is heart rate. It’s THE most important metric you can track, so I wear a Polar HR monitor during training on almost all my runs. I track mileage that way too with a GPS, but it’s really secondary to heart rate and time on my feet.

Q. Any specific device or app that you would recommend to our readers?

A. My favorite has been the Polar RCX-5 GPS. Polar is the best in the business for heart rate measurement and their system with a separate GPS sensor is key for me. I’m a watch user so an all in one unit just doesn’t work for me. The RCX-5 is small enough to use all the time and I can only grab the GPS unit with a 20 hour battery life along with the HR strap on the way out the door.

Q. A couple of songs that come to mind that help you get over the hump when training or competing?

A. I don’t normally listen to music when I run, so it’s usually the last thing I listen to that gets stuck in my skull. Quite annoying actually. I’ll be warming up in Linkin Park most of the time and that can give me a lot of encouragement for a shorter race.

Q. Any basic advice for those looking to improve their running skills?

Not long ago, I read on a social media platform about a nonprofit candidate who would become the CEO of an organization where the founder would remain. I’ve written about this in the past, but this particular situation caught my interest because of what the board allowed to happen. I thought it was interesting and a recipe for trouble.

Situation

The candidate to become the new executive would succeed the founding executive, who would take up a paid part-time position within the charity. There were a couple of red flags that I saw in the post.

  • The board told the candidate that he would have authority, but was not allowed to let the founder go if he did not work. I don’t know about you, but that doesn’t sound like authority to me if you’re not allowed to fire someone if the fit isn’t right.
  • The founder’s part-time paid role had yet to be determined. That seemed like a major issue in the works due to lack of clarity. I was wondering, who would create the job description for the new role of founder? Would the new executive have any authority over him, or would it just be responsibility without power?
  • The candidate was told that although he could delegate responsibilities to the founder, once the position was created, the board was unsure if the founder would execute. Well, there are a lot of problems with that fact. So, it seemed like the board was telling the candidate that while he was responsible for the proper management of the organization in regards to the (paid) position of the founder, all bets were off.
  • Finally, the board informed the candidate that they expected him to be a leader and figure out how to work effectively with the founder. That is really fascinating! In effect, the board creates a situation where the founder is paid to play a role within the organization, and not do the work, if he chooses, but all the onus is on the new executive to “make it happen.” works”.

I have written in the past about Founder Syndrome, which is when power (implicit or explicit) revolves around the founder and his cult of personality and influence. As I have noted in the past, “The environment becomes dysfunctional when the board fails to fulfill its governance responsibility and staff are not allowed to object or debate. Ideas and initiatives stall if the founder does not support them. Essentially, the founder he becomes the ruler of his fiefdom, and the interest of the organization becomes secondary.”

However, what I want to tell you here is that the situation described above is a recipe for trouble, but it doesn’t have to be that way.

Confusion

When the founder stays inside the organization, the successor’s job becomes infinitely more difficult because he or she is navigating a political landmine, and that’s not fair to the organization. In the scenario that the founder and executive now become part-time employees, the chances of alliances by some board members and staff who are still loyal to the founder increase exponentially. And, all he creates is confusion, and frankly, a problem for the organization that is not conducive to good governance and functioning of the nonprofit.

If you’re a nonprofit board member and the time has come to move on to a new leader, do the organization a favor by not letting the founder remain on staff. Consider giving the founder an emeritus role on the board, but don’t create a situation that depletes the collective energy of the organization because of the political toxicity that could develop. And, if you’re a founder, if I can do it, you can do it. When the time comes when you need to step aside, do it. It doesn’t mean you can’t create something else or discover other ways to do what you love. Take your energy and what you have learned and channel it positively.

For nutritional vitamin supplements to have the proper effect, nutritional intake must be accompanied by sufficient exercise. While a balanced diet is a must, it won’t show the expected results if you can’t fit some cardio or weight training into your daily routine. Walking at a brisk pace for half an hour at least every other day is sufficient as a cardiovascular exercise. For weight training, light weights are more than enough. Plenty of fruits and vegetables in the diet along with lean meats and a certain number of dietary supplements will solve all your nutrition problems.
