As you enter the world of Gates of Andaron, after selecting the type of class and race you want to be, you will enter the tutorial mode. The screen settings for hotbars and such are typical settings you’ll see in other online role-playing games. Unfortunately, not all boxes can be dragged and set exactly where you want them. You’ll notice that when playing as a summoner, the messages you receive when you attack will get in the way of your pets’ hotbar. Of course it’s not the end of the world, but it sure is a nuisance.

Leveling up is pretty advanced and doesn’t take long at the start of the game, and with the items you collect and the enemies you fight, everything seems pretty balanced, including the quests. Of course you could just level up, but there are easier ways and definitely more “fun” ways to level up by playing Gates of Andaron.

When I played GoA for the first time, comparisons between this and others came to mind… and if you’ve seen the images online, the first thing that comes to mind is definitely “WoW”. Sadly, at the end of this game review, Gates of Andaron is missing an in-game auction house. Although maybe it’s because it would be more difficult to write about a free online game, this would be the only factor that would really complete this game for me. Like others of its ilk, GoA has an afk shop system that works pretty well, you just need to be in a high-traffic area to sell. It is not seen in the PvP area, but there is dueling. Perhaps the PvP action happens in the war system I’ve seen, though I haven’t tested it yet. Maybe it’s something to be compared to Warhammer online. I’ll have to find out later.

If you use a Epson Stylus Color 880 printer, you may not be able to use it on your Windows 10 computer.

Typical symptoms of this issue are that it will appear as a “USB Printer” within the “Printers” section of Windows 10, but may actually appear as “Epson Stylus Color 880” in Device Manager.

The problem is that Windows 10 (especially 1709) doesn’t recognize the driver and therefore can’t get the printer to work.

The solution is to make sure that Windows 10 can run the driver, which means downloading the most appropriate one from the internet or removing errors and other system issues. This is actually relatively simple, as explained below…

Cause

The reason for the issue is a difference in the way Windows 10 (1709) works with the underlying system drivers.

Some of the older drivers (written by hardware manufacturers) don’t work with the new hardware/IO APIs within the system, making Windows unable to manage any of the underlying issues you may be having.

To make sure this isn’t a problem, you need to make sure you’re using a compatible driver, or at least a driver that works with the way Windows version 1709 works. To do this, you need to make sure that you can get an effectively working version of the driver.

Solution

Alright, now that we have the newest video card drivers (and have rebooted our computer), let’s take a look at the next big push. Many people will discuss my suggestions in this section, but that’s a good thing, because depending on your video card model, driver version, DirectX version, and whether or not you have an Adobe product loaded on your system (strange, what? isn’t it, luckily (it doesn’t matter because we’re going to play with the settings here anyway…) these settings will be different for everyone. So, let’s start with the display properties of World of Warcraft.

While Warcraft is running, hover your mouse over the latency bar. Yeah, that little green bar (although probably yellow if you’re on one of the original damn servers) that tells you the latency between you and the wow servers. Ever detected a recent patch, it also shows us our video FPS (frames per second). So this is what I want it to do. Start changing the settings in the video options menu and keep restarting wow and check this number. Smooth gameplay ranges from 30-45fps (and of course higher on faster computers…) and will go up or down depending on where you are (in Orgrimmar expect low FPS, and in arena you can expect low FPS much higher) so make sure you are in the same place when you take each sample. This is time consuming and irritating, but once you have the optimal settings for your system, your game will be much smoother. Remember, when you hover over the video settings, Blizzard usually tells you if the settings will help or hinder performance.

This last setting is relevant only for Windows Vista. Here are two settings I want to point out that destroyed the performance of my system. Duel monitor setups will slow down a lot on Vista, and not running Warcraft in full screen will be a huge performance blight. Now let’s talk about Vista settings. What I want you to do is right click on the World of Warcraft icon and go to “Properties”. In properties you will have to go to the “compatibility” tab. Check “Disable visual themes”, “Disable desktop compositing” and “Disable display scaling at high DPI settings” and click apply. This will disable some of Vista’s special effects while World of Warcraft is running. This will help WoW performance. I haven’t noticed “Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP (Service Pack 2)” to make any difference.
