Working as a security guard often means being on your feet for long periods of time or keeping watch in a call center during a night shift. Seemingly endless stretches of uneventful or off-hours downtime can eventually become monotonous, causing boredom or fatigue. Because the primary duty of security personnel is to protect and monitor people or property, they must be careful not to engage in any activities or hobbies that might interfere with or distract their attention. However, there are some useful and functional things a security guard can do to get through a boring shift.

Keep it moving: Getting moving, getting the blood flowing and maintaining energy is key to staying sharp, both physically and mentally. Pacing back and forth in your designated area is always an option, although many times this may mean just a few feet and if a guard is employed at a store, business or public place, it is likely that part of their day will include “doing the rounds”, which can mean a strategic tour of the area they are patrolling. This common procedure usually occurs at specific times during the course of a shift. Ask your supervisor to increase your number of rounds or expand your checkpoints to include new territories. Even simply adding another regulation ride to the boring hours of the afternoon will infuse a bit of variety into the workday.

Make A Muscle: Almost all security and bodyguards are required to be physically fit and maintain formidable form; While the degree of physical labor varies depending on their experience and the needs of their employers, most professionals in this occupation practice ongoing fitness and make their exercise routine a priority. Downtime at work is a perfect opportunity to rejuvenate your mind and body by doing a series of push-ups, jumping jacks, stretches, or even using the wall for resistance-style exercises.

Listen and Learn: Security guards need to hear what’s going on around them, so headphones or loud music aren’t recommended, but for desk guards and call center workers, a small radio or player of MP3’s at low volume can provide just the right amount. stimulation to maintain a focused and invested mindset. If permitted, an MP3 player or low-profile listening device in one ear can provide moderate entertainment while maintaining focus on the work at hand.

Depending on the situation, one or more of the above activities may or may not be suitable for certain situations. It’s a good idea for guards to find out about company protocol before taking up any hobbies that aren’t part of their primary job.

Accra is the capital city of Ghana, the nation on the West African coast. The city of Accra is divided into two parts, namely the Greater Accra Region and the Accra Metropolitan District. Accra is the economic, administrative and communications center of Ghana. About 70% of the country’s manufacturing capacity is located in this district. Since 1877, Accra has been the capital of Ghana. Historic public buildings demonstrate the city’s transition from a 19th-century suburb to today’s modern metropolis.

Accra’s standout attractions are the National Theater with its unique and modern architecture, the National Museum with exhibits showcasing Ghana’s heritage from ancient to modern times, the National Arts Center with arts and crafts for all tastes, The Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, Independence Square, Accra International Conference Center, Makola Market and Jamestown Fishing Port.

Accra is historically known to have been founded by the Ga people in the 14th century. During its history, Accra has also served as a center of trade with the Portuguese and they built a small fort in the city at the time. However, this city remained under the influence of other European nations like Swedes, French, Dutch, Danes and British at different times and built these nationals also built their forts in Accra.

Today, Accra has become a city developed around the original city of Ga. The British, Dutch and Danish forts and neighboring communities are also an integral part of modern Accra. The city stretches along the Atlantic Coast with great value for luxury hotels, nightclubs and restaurants with exceptional views of the coastline. A wide range of excellent public monuments, shopping areas and museums. There is much to explore, such as the busy market and tree-lined residential areas.

It’s no wonder why kids love to take their “mini-vacations” to go to the park and play. It’s an adventure for them, they can be outside and of course there are usually swings and other fun things to explore. Then it happens; boredom strikes and a bad mood sets in. Just because they’re tired of swinging around and starting to whimper doesn’t mean you should pack up everything and go home. There are many fun activities you can do together while you’re here.

1. Scavenger hunt: You can make this list before you go to the park so that when the kids get tired of playing, this list is ready. Your scavenger hunt list can include items you can physically pick up and things you just want to look for and check off the list. Leaves, a smooth rock, and a nut can be collected from a tree and then you can look for a squirrel, butterfly, robin, duck (depending on whether your park has water), etc. If you have two adults going to the park, this could be a pretty long list of small items that you could carry in a bag from home and one adult could stash the items around the park while the other watches the kids. Then you can explore the park looking for things together.

2. Soccer: Carrying a ball, specifically a ball designed for young children, is a great way to not only kill time but wear them down. Young children most likely aren’t kicking the ball too hard, so no special equipment is necessary, but you can make goal posts out of rocks or your jacket, picnic basket, or whatever you have on hand.

3. Kite Flying – Even in the slightest amount of wind, you can easily fly a kite and this is a great fun activity for young children. Kites can be bought relatively cheaply in stores, sometimes even for $1 if you don’t need anything fancy and then you can spend some time getting your kites in the air.

4. Simon Says: Of course you can play Simon Says at home, but you don’t have enough space to “take 10 steps back” or “take 6 jumps forward”. This is a favorite game of young children and the more steps and jumps they make, the better they will nap later.

5. Frisbee: Little kids love to play with a Frisbee and if you’re at the park then you don’t have to worry about the Frisbee constantly jumping over the neighbor’s yard fence or hitting the tree in your little backyard. You can even set up goal posts like football and try to get the Frisbee through the posts.

It is much more exciting for a young child if you play with him instead of looking at him. It’s a great time to bond and make memories and it also teaches them to be creative. If children learn that they can use things like rocks for a goal post, etc., it enhances their creativity so they don’t always feel like they have to rely on “stuff” for entertainment. The next time you go to the park, take a ball or a kite with you. They are easy to store in your bag where you already carry snacks and a first aid kit and play a few games with your toddler.

Ever wonder why we have a fireworks bonfire at night? Heard the Guy Fawkes stories but he never really knew what the story was about? Read on to discover the story behind Bonfire Night: November 5.

In 1605, a man named Guy Fawkes and some helpers tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London using 36 barrels of gunpowder in the cellar. His plan was to kill King James and his leaders because of some laws against Roman Catholics. The group of men led by Robert Catesby believed that the government was treating Roman Catholics unfairly. Catholics had to practice their religion in secret.

The group of men bought a house next to the parliament building because the basement was under the parliament building, they planned to blow up the parliament when the King opened the parliament next time. Some of the men chickened out and let the plan slip, prompting the King to make plans to stop this attack.

Of the group of men, Guy Fawkes was assigned the job of guarding the powder kegs and then lighting the fuse at the right time. On the morning of November 5, soldiers discovered Guy hiding in the basement and arrested him. He was taken to the Tower of London where he was tortured and questioned about the rest of the conspirators. He was finally executed.

To celebrate the survival of King James, he ordered the people of England to make a great bonfire every year on the night of November 5. Some of us English have been known to wonder, ironically, whether we are celebrating Fawkes’s execution or honoring his attempt to bring down the government.

In London this November 5th there is a display at Bishops Park which is open from 6:00pm, with the fireworks display between 7:30pm and 8:00pm Crystal Palace has a fireworks display which opens from 6:00 p.m., and the fireworks display is between 7:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. The Wimbledon fireworks display is open from 6:30 p.m., and the fireworks display between 6:45 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Whether you want to celebrate the survival of King James or honor Guy Fawkes and his conspirators trying to take down the government, there will be plenty of bonfire nights in your area. Even if you couldn’t care less about the story of the night, standing around a campfire to watch fireworks streak across the sky is a great way to spend one night a year.

The International Broad Cost of Living Index rankings are reported as of April 2010 using New York as the base city. The indices are calculated using the prices of specific amounts of the same goods and services in each location, based on expatriate spending patterns in 13 broad categories (Basket Groups).

The cost of living studied is the cost of maintaining an expatriate standard of living. When comparing the cost of living between different locations, the goal is to calculate the difference in cost of living and express it as a cost of living index by dividing the cost of living in Location A by the cost of living in Location B.

The cost of living index reports the difference in cost of living between the 2 locations for the same items purchased. For example, an index of 140 means that the location is 40% more expensive than the comparison location. This would mean that a person moving between the two locations would need to earn 40% more to have the same standard of living as they do today.

Tokyo is, in general, the most expensive place in the world for expats. Tokyo is also the most expensive place in the world for accommodation, while it is the fourth most expensive place in the world for groceries. Brasilia has risen 9 places since October 12, 2009 to be the third most expensive place in the world to live for expats. Sydney has rocketed up the rankings to 10th place having been ranked 15th in January this year. Dubai has dropped a further 8 places after dropping 9 places in the previous quarter to drop out of the top 10 and is now in 26th place, but oddly enough it is still the most expensive place for restaurants, dining out and hotel costs.

The fastest riser is Ashgabat in Turkmenistan, which has risen 94 places from 257 to 163. The relative cost of living for expats in Gibraltar has also risen sharply, rising 94 places to 92. South Africa has seen a significant rise in cost overall living conditions due mainly to the strengthening of the Rand. Cape Town has risen 53 places to rank 193.

Alcohol and tobacco is most expensive in South Tarawa in Kiribati, followed by Moroni in the Comoros and Oslo in Norway. Clothes are most expensive in Manama, Bahrain, followed by Moscow, Russia. Education is more expensive in Caracas, Venezuela and Brasilia in Brazil. Groceries are more expensive in Kiribati. Oslo, Norway is the most expensive for transportation.

Today’s Ruhstaller Beer represents itself as a revival of the Ruhstaller Brewery of the late 1880s, both of which have a Sacramento beer and hop heritage. But similarities continue between past and present with the strong commitment to locally sourced ingredients and quality. Today’s Ruhstaller’s has a California ingredients list that shows almost exclusively California sources. Ruhstaller Brewery of the past was also a highly regarded local ingredient brewery for several decades, beginning just after the California Gold Rush era (1849-1855) and disappearing due to Prohibition from 1920 to 1933.

Captain Frank Ruhstaller came to the United States at age 15, arriving in Sacramento in 1865. In Sacramento he began working in breweries and a few years later bought his first brewery. Upon his death in 1907, the local newspaper wrote in his obituary: “Surely no death has caused more sorrow in this city than that of Captain Frank J. Ruhstaller.” He was a beloved gentleman by all accounts.

The backstory on today’s Ruhstaller beer centers on Sacramento as it was with the original Ruhstaller brewery. Frank Ruhstaller built the largest brewery west of the Mississippi in Sacramento. That’s amazing because Sacramento, at one point, had 16 breweries in town. Much of Sacramento’s economic success was based on population growth (due to the gold rush), agriculture, large water sources, the railroad, and access to the sea. From 1870 to 1880, the Sacramento region became the hop capital of the world due to the success of quality beer. Regional hop growers even exported their hops to Europe.

An interesting fact from the time is that Adolphus Busch came to the United States in 1857. In 1861 he married the daughter of another German immigrant named Eberhard Anheuser. Mr. Anheuser had opened a small brewery in St. Louis, MO in 1857. After the Civil War, Busch went to work for his mother-in-law at the Anheuser Brewery located “west of the Mississippi.” Here’s what’s interesting: Frank Ruhstaller had built the Ruhstaller Brewery empire in Sacramento to be the largest west of the Mississippi in 1881. He pulled it off on his own.

In an era in California where agriculture was king, it was the quantity, quality and variety of hops that was amazing for the time. Sacramento would eventually become the main supplier of hops to much of the world’s and American breweries.

You could say that Ruhstaller Brewery (formerly) was one of the first premium craft breweries. They produced a steam beer 15 years before Anchor Steam was founded. According to Beer-FAQ, “Steam beer is a style of beer that originated in California during the gold rush. They are usually clear and crisp like a lager, but also full-bodied like an ale. The taste is Roasty and malty but with quite aggressive hops and carbonation. The brewing process is unique in that it uses lager yeast but brewed at warmer brewing temperatures.

Taking the banner of the original Rruhstaller Brewery, in 2011 Ruhstaller Beer began operations. The culture of the first Ruhstaller Brewery is the foundation for today’s award-winning “Ruhstaller Beer•Sacramento.” The founder and leader of Ruhstaller Beer is Mr. JE Paino. JE, as he prefers to be called, graduated from UC Davis with a bachelor’s degree in business administration; the beer race came later. He impresses me as a down to earth person who appreciates the team approach and is totally customer focused. Like many who build companies, he is driven by the quality of his ingredients, and that quality begins with the hops, namely Sacramento hops.

JE has been methodical in creating an award-winning craft beer company brand, building on Sacramento’s rich history in beer, grains and hops. The company has invested a great deal of time and money to nurture the hop industry that remains today. Enough hops are produced from 3 local hop farms to supply Ruhstaller Beer with most of the hops they need, except for the 5% that comes from outside of California. Even the barley comes from farmers in Northern California.

JE is not shy about his belief that California offers the best environmental/terroir conditions for growing premium hops. “I’ve tried it on our own 10 acres of hops,” says Paino. As he drives west on I-80 in Dixon, CA, he can see his hop farm on the side of the road. “At Ruhstaller Beer, we believe that a great beer starts with the best ingredients. Like our founder, Captain Frank Ruhstaller, we’re partnering with California hop and barley farmers to grow the best California ingredients for our beers.

To show how serious Ruhstaller Beer is about their commitment to ingredients, they started a hop school to teach the history of Ruhstaller, the techniques needed to grow premium hops, and help consumers understand the foundation of a good beer. In fact, the class is not free, in 2019 they charged $30 per participant for 6 sessions and provided lunch and beer.

Interestingly, Sacramento was the hop capital of the world and that era is generally recognized to have started around 1850. A hop farmer from that period started a hop farm located at what is now the University of Sacramento. By 1904, that producer was supplying hops to the Guinness Brewery.

Research indicates that most people buy craft beer based on regional identity, a recommendation, a positive tasting experience, label design, and brand loyalty. If a brewery owner and employees are passionate about what they are doing, they will inherently drive quality and customer recognition. The value of quality, passion and a recognizable corporate culture that is recognizable will drive consumer brand loyalty.

To paraphrase a legendary New York City advertising genius: if it doesn’t sell, nothing else matters. Ruhstaller Beer’s marketing approach has probably had a profound impact on the brand. As just noted, Ruhstaller Beer•Sacramento is based on a historic regional name known for consistent quality, support from local producers, and an identity consumers can relate to. From faucet handles they make out of old farm implements to the stylized abstract silhouette of a man with a cigar and the name ‘Sacramento’ on their labels; they have created a brand that is easy to understand and creates affinity. Who doesn’t like the success story built on the early history of an upstart Western brewery?

In the Yolo County News Bret Johnson’s article, JE Paino (founder of Ruhstaller Beer) says about beer marketing: “You can’t just have a good story with a good name. You have to have a good beer first. When Sacramento was the -region in growth in America before Prohibition, brewers were competing on quality, not Super Bowl ads. Not gimmicks. It had to be good beer. It was supposed to be better beer.” The Ruhstaller family presented Paino with one of the original gold-rimmed glasses.

In that same interview, Paino forecast that beers made with local hops will cost an extra 50 cents per bottle. To justify the cost, it is essential that the consumer is aware of the value and purpose of quality ingredients that add aroma, flavor and mouthfeel to the quality craft beer experience.

It’s about Ruhstaller Beer•Sacramento: Yes, the name does matter. The resurrection of the iconic JE Paino name comes with best wishes from the surviving Frank Ruhstaller family. Today’s Ruhstaller beer is unique in the craft beer industry because of its history. This craft beer brand has roots dating back to 1881 in its humble beginnings. The history of Ruhstaller Beer today is the documented history of Frank Ruhstaller, the history of Sacramento as the beer capital of the western half of the US, the history of ingredient sourcing, and a deep history of corporate culture. We can always learn from the masters of old. Mr. JE Paino adds to the Ruhstaller legacy/story by adding a deep understanding of building brand loyalty over true quality.

History can make a good beer!

There are plenty of cool destinations to travel to, but if you have better things to do than work on your abs and tan 7 days a week (like keep your blog up to date, obsess over your web stats, play World of Warcraft, etc.), then those hot spots could leave you feeling very cold when you step off the plane and into a real-world episode.

If you’re single, part of the appeal of going on vacation is hooking up with an awesome foreigner for fun times and maybe even a little instant messaging once you get back home. But let’s be realistic; If you think you’re going to fly to Brazil or Hawaii and stand out from the masses of hard, tanned bodies, you’re really lowering your chances of a perfect vacation.

I don’t know about you, but I prefer to go on vacation to have a great time, than not to come back with complexes. Also, I don’t want sand getting in my laptop and I’m absolutely certain I won’t go a week without my G5. There are places in the world where a geek can go and have a good time, enjoy the company of like-minded people, and even have a decent conversation with a smart and attractive partner.

Amsterdam: If you haven’t been to Amsterdam, go there as soon as possible. The fact that almost everything is legal there isn’t what’s so great, it’s the fact that because it is, everyone is down to earth and open. Many of the coffee shops have high-speed internet access, and unlike Starbucks, people talk to other people, so there’s a good chance you’ll meet new and interesting people on your travels. Also, it rains a lot there, so no one expects you to have a Coppertone body.

Queensday is a great time to go to Amsterdam if you are looking for a festive party where you will have the chance to meet lots of fun loving people. The party begins on April 30 and does not end until the following night. Another good time to go is during the 3-week Holland Festival between May 29 and June 24. Prepare to be knee-deep in culture, visual arts, theater, and everything with an avant-garde twist.

Sweden: Yes, Sweden. Although you may not have heard much about Sweden, this small country is a geek’s paradise. The 2005 book “Flight of the Creative Class” states that “Sweden is the most creative country in Europe and is positioned to attract the best talent in the important and emerging creative class, defined as scientists, designers, writers, IT nerds and other working brains”.

Not only that, but a lot of great music comes out of Sweden: progressive music, punk, death metal and all kinds of emerging bands. There are even quite a few nude beaches in Sweden, and next door in Denmark, skinny-dipping is accepted almost everywhere.

Ireland: Just about every RPG geek, nerd, and obsessive has harbored some sort of affinity for Irish lore at one point or another. It’s not going to be the reincarnation of Middle-earth, but when you get there, you won’t be disappointed.

Definitely go there for the Dublin St. Patrick’s Day festivities if possible, which falls between March 15-19. When 1.5 million people are out on the streets partying to Celtic beats and drinking beer, it’s bound to be a good time. Then in June there’s the Dublin Writers’ Festival and soon after that the Dublin Pub Crawl, where you can tour Dublin’s central pubs with literary connections with a group of beer-drinking literary fanatics.

If you’re like me and you like vacations where you get to experience some culture, festivities, and actually get to meet some really cool people, check out these geek-friendly spots. Instead of paying online for your European hotels, go to a place like EuroBookings where you don’t actually pay first, but instead book the best price online; That way, if rates drop between now and your stay, you’ll have more money to spend on pints, coffee, and good food.
