There is so much power in a greeting. Years ago, we had to greet everyone with a kiss. Sometimes it was really big. Nathaniël has this story about the aunt with the mole you had to dodge, or the other one with her lips so flabby it left you wondering if she forgot her dentures that morning. At least nowadays we like hugs better.

And men too! At first this was quite funny, but as I got used to it, I realized that a hug conveys much more than a firm handshake. Somehow it communicates affection, warmth, respect, friendship and much more.

We were going out for the night and my son was excited to order a pizza to go through Uber, which for him offers a few varieties of his mother’s kitchen.

Shortly after, the doorbell rang. After a while my son came back with the pizza and he no longer had a piece. I commented with surprise that he must have been very hungry to have already eaten a piece on the way from the front door to the kitchen.

He replied, “No, I gave it to the guy who delivered the pizza.” But why, I asked. My son said, “When the pizza delivery man handed it to me, he touched his left hand to his right elbow. You know, Dad, that’s the way they convey respect. So I responded appropriately on my part and shared a slice pizza with him.

Wow! Something happened here that is more than a greeting. Two people who don’t know each other at all walk away changed. Walk away with a smile in your hearts and a slightly fuller belly. This is how it should be. When we end up in each other’s space, even for a fleeting moment, we must leave changed, better, nicer, more.

Perhaps Paul understood something of greeting, because he always said something nice about readers at the end of his letters. Here, at the end of Titus, it’s no different: 15… Thanks to all of you. Or as The Living Bible says: 15…God’s blessings be with you all.

And don’t we all need such a lot of blessings, grace and goodness? In a way, that’s exactly what my son did. The delivery man experienced some of God’s goodness, through a slice of pizza in his belly.

Somewhere in my head, I put a reminder to myself to greet people differently from now on. There are so many hungry people out there, people who long for just a little bit of grace, a little bit of goodness. God’s pantry is full of it and he’s looking for a takeout window to share it.

Let us make our doors and windows like this and be the channel through which God’s grace and goodness can flow to others. Let’s greet people and bless with God’s grace. Every day, every time.

They will check your running stride and many times record it so you can see the mechanics of your feet as you run. Who knew that some people’s feet naturally turn outward when the foot lands (supination) and others turn inward (pronation). I certainly didn’t. After a few minutes with an experienced runner, they were able to recommend the right type of shoe for my natural stride. They were also able to help me decide how much support I needed compared to how much cushioning the shoe provided.

After putting on proper shoes, the pain in my knees and lower legs (shins and calves) was greatly reduced.

Of all the tips for new runners, this is undoubtedly the most valuable. If you’re making a real lifestyle change, this is non-negotiable advice.

Less is more

This may seem counter-intuitive, but I assure you that trying to do too much too fast WILL HURT! Running like any other exercise requires periods of effort and recovery for the body to adapt and become stronger. Well, unlike other activities, running requires longer periods of recovery. Sorting through the multitude of plans and tips available on the web, as well as through trial and error, the 80/20 rule is the best place to start. 80 percent of your entire run should be at a low or very low intensity. At first, I struggled to stay motivated. Truth be told, I still struggle to stay motivated. Let’s face it, it’s hard to stay motivated when you can only run for 30 seconds and then walk for 2 minutes. It can be hard to truly appreciate the small gains you make day in and day out. Don’t let this fight get the best of you. Most people who stop running do so within the first week of trying. Appreciate small gains and celebrate improvements. Even if you discover that tomorrow you can jog for 31 seconds… celebrate the achievement. You have earned it. If you start having negative thoughts and trust me EVERYONE does from time to time, develop a mantra to push the thoughts out of your mind while running. “I have this”, “All walls have doors”, or my personal and alternative favorite “Today, define yourself” are examples of good strong mantras. My own experience suggests that you should avoid negative words in your Mantra. Avoid Don’t, Can’t, Won’t, etc., the subconscious is a powerful thing, there is no need to feed it negative energy. Every time you have a negative thought while running, immediately start repeating your mantra. Soon, you will be able to push out negative thoughts as soon as they appear and allow positive thoughts to replace them. This may be the most overlooked tip for new runners.

Enjoy the process…Because there are no Shortcuts

I would love to tell you that after only a few months I am running half marathons and enjoying every minute of my newly developed and still growing running experience. The truth is though, I’m just getting ready for my first 5K and while I’ve come a long way (from 1/4 mile before my first walk break on day 1 to about 4.5 miles before from my first walking break after 4 months), it takes work and commitment to want to be better. There are no shortcuts to improving your running form. Learn to enjoy the process of learning to run. Take a moment on your easy run or during your walk breaks to look around and see if you can notice anything you’ve never noticed before. Enjoy the feeling of accomplishment each time you jog a little further than last time or take a shorter break than before.

At the end of the day, the best way to improve your running is…running. I just hope you can do it with less pain and more education than me.

every mile counts

Jefferson Davis was elected as the sole president of the Confederate States of America on February 9, 1861.

Davis was born on June 3, 1808, in Kentucky and grew up on a successful cotton plantation in Mississippi. He was the youngest of ten children born to Samuel and Jane Davis. His education included Transylvania University. After graduating in 1828 from West Point, Davis served in the infantry. In 1835 he married Sarah, the daughter of Zachary Taylor. They moved from Wisconsin to Mississippi. Within 3 months, Sarah and Jefferson contracted malaria. Sara died of the disease. Davis recovered, but the combination of illness and injury left him in ill health that plagued him his entire life.

For the next 10 years, Davis lived on his cotton plantation and became more active in politics. In 1845 he married Varina Howell and the Davises went to Washington DC where he served in the House of Representatives. They made a good team, with their entertaining prowess and their eloquence.

Jefferson and Varina were the parents of six children, two of whom died in infancy.

Davis left Congress to serve as an officer in the Mexican War. Returning from the war, he was appointed to the United States Senate. He lost a close race for Governor of Mississippi, but was later appointed Secretary of War for Franklin Pierce. Davis was serving as a senator again when Mississippi seceded from the Union in January 1861.

He was invested on February 18, 1861 and, after the permanent adoption of the constitution, again elected by popular vote for a period of 6 years and again invested on February 22.

Davis didn’t seek out the office, but he lived up to the call. He felt better prepared for leadership on the field. His distinguished careers as a soldier and civilian led many to believe that he was a natural leader for the new Confederacy.

He wholeheartedly supported a peace conference designed to create a plan to reconcile the Union and the Confederacy. But his failure made war inevitable.

The first capital of the Confederacy was in Montgomery, Alabama. The capital changed to Richmond in May 1861, when Virginia joined its sister states in secession.

By April 1862 he had convinced the Confederate Congress to authorize the first draft draft. Davis also initiated martial law, railroad regulation, property printing, harsh tax laws, and diplomacy with France and England with the intent of gaining trade and recognition of Confederate independence.

Davis is criticized for micromanaging military maneuvers from his distant Confederate White House, rather than leaving the tactical details to his generals. As a president with a formidable cause, Davis was not a particularly low-key person, often perceived as authoritarian and inflexible.

General Robert E Lee surrendered on April 9, 1861 without the consent of President Davis. Davis hoped to continue the war, but was captured on May 10 as he fled to Florida. He was jailed for two years before he was allowed to post bail.

He lived 12 years after the Civil War and had much public support from his fellow Southerners. He retired to write his memoir Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government, (2 vol. 1881) and wrote A Short History of the Confederate States of America, published after his death.

Davis died in New Orleans of pneumonia on December 6, 1889.
